Breeding dragons play an important role in Flight Rising. Here we'll talk about how colours and genes work when breeding, as well as some important things to know should you choose to aim for dragons of value.

and how it works
and how it works
The nesting grounds are used for breeding, and in it you can put two dragons depending on their on-site gender. They must be incubated five times, once each day, for a minimum of five days and are then hatched on the sixth day. Nests can contain 1 to 5 eggs, but dragons of the same breed will not produce 5 eggs. (A coatl and a fae can possibly produce 5 eggs, but two faes can only ever have 4 eggs.)
Furthermore, there are modern and ancient breeds. Modern breeds can wear apparel, ancient breeds cannot. Modern breeds can breed with each other, such as a guardian with a skydancer, and produce or the other, but ancient breeds can only ever breed with another of their breed, such as a gaoler with another gaoler.
When dragons are bred together, they go on a cooldown. The cooldown can last anywhere between 15 to 35 days depending on the breed. See Dragon Breeds in the encyclopedia for more information on which has which.
What the hatchlings are born with in terms of genes, breeds, and colours varies depending on the parents and RNG. If the parents have different genes, there is a percentage chance assigned to each breed and hatchlings will be one or the other. More common breeds, like faes and guardians, are more likely to hatch when bred with uncommon or rare breeds, like coatls and imperials.
Genes also are assigned rarities, and there is an encyclopedia article linked above to go into more detail on that. The primary, seconary, and tertiary gene is determined by the parents and what they have. Breeding your two progens together when you first get them, for example, results in triple basic hatchlings.
Colours are determined in a slightly more complicated way. There are 177 possible colours total on site, and we call it the colour wheel. The reason for that is because the colours of bred dragons is determined by the wheel.
If you breed a dragon with a primary colour of smoke with a dragon that has a primary colour of brick, the site will find the shortest possible route through the color wheel and then any hatchlings bred will have a primary colour in that range. If you go to the scrying workshop, and look at one of the colour toggles, you might first assume that this means it will go through all possible colours as smoke is at the top of the list and brick is at the bottom. However, the list wraps around, so instead the colour options would be rather short, going up through grey dust silver platinum etc passing up through maize, all the way around to pearl and then up to brick. This is better visualized as an actual wheel, off-site link here: x
The inner circle in the above image is smaller wheel of 67 colours, and it was those 67 colours you picked from when designing your custom progen. Custom progens are the only dragons that are limited to the smaller colour wheel, but those colours can of course be changed with a scatterscroll.

the difference between modern and ancient
the difference between modern and ancient
When dragons are born via nests, the genes are determined by the parents. However, they can be changed. Gene scrolls are either bought in the marketplace for treasure or gems, acquired in the coliseum as a random drop, or brewed in Baldwin's Bubbling Brew for goop and treasure.
Modern breeds share the same possible genes, but ancient breeds have limited and unique genes. If a gene is intended for an ancient breed, it will differentiate it in the name:
When buying genes, it's good practice to double check you're not getting one for the wrong breed! Ancient breed genes are notably less in price comparatively, which is a helpful distinction.
