A Day in the Life of a Coli Master
“Callis!” It was Bonney. He sighed, rolling over to face her. “What is going on?” Bonney pointed at the three Pearlcatcher trainees he had been assigned to begin coaching as of yesterday. “You went way too hard on them, Callis. Do you know how long it took Feenyx to convince them to come back?” “They need to learn the hardships of battle, and if I have to teach them the hard way then I will.” They need to learn! Battles aren’t glamorous or fun. They’re our duty! Quitters aren’t allowed here. “Look, Callis, you need to ease them into it. You might be just fine giving yourself that nasty training regimen of yours, but not everydragon works that way.” Callis sighed. “All right all right.” He turned to face the trio. Whippersnappers, he thought to himself. They have no clue what they’re ever in for, do they? Life is but a dream… “Ahem.” He took a deep breath, putting together a short speech. “I apologize if I scared some of you off yesterday. I just want you all to realize that being a warrior of the clan is not easy. Siltaria has high expectations for us. This isn’t just about warding off the rogue beastclans. This is about gathering resources, finding food, mastering diplomacy, establishing our territory. This isn’t just a job, it’s going to be your way of life. If you are committed to that, then you will have to be responsible and never, ever shirk your duty. I mean it. If you can’t do that, you need to leave.” One of the trainees, Galina, a Pearlcatcher gifted in magic, dipped her head and then said, “Callis, we will commit ourselves. But we cannot fight for our clan, for Siltaria, if we are injured. You might be able to fight through broken bones and deep cuts, but we cannot. Admirable speech, but you’re missing the point.” Callis growled quietly to himself. What is it with these dragons? So spoiled nowadays. “It’s true, in the ideal situation, you won’t ever have to fight on an injury. But what if there comes a day when we must fight tooth and claw with no reserve, and no time to rest? You must be conditioned to fight under such stress and urgency.” “That is something you can do, Callis,” said Galina firmly. “But we will not do that. Especially not me. You know that mages can’t use their magic properly if injured.” “I…I’m sorry,” said Callis again. “I forgot. It’s been ages since I have trained a mage.” He looked at everyone. “Well then…are we ready for a new day?” There was a small uproar of applause and Galina smiled. “By the way, Callis, after we’re done for today, I’ve heard you like pirates?” Callis went red. “No, I don’t!” “Hahaha, imagine that, the rough-and-tough fighting legend of Siltaria’s clan, obsessed with pirates!” Galina chuckled. "It's just that there's a little pirate thing going on with the hatchlings later tonight...they're having a costume contest. Wouldn't you want to see?" Callis grumbled under his breath. "...Maybe." Bonney leaned close and whispered into Galina’s ear, “He also loves tomatoes.” “Bonney, what are you saying?” said Callis sternly. “Nothing, my dear. Now go on, training awaits, yes?” She looked at Galina and the others. “I’ll have food for you all when you’re done.” “Follow me,” said Callis imperiously, resuming his stern appearance. Galina began to think about a way to thank Callis when their training was finished and they were initiated as warriors of Siltaria in full. There had to be some way to make him smile—maybe even laugh a little. Now that would be something! Pirates, Bonney said…and according to Feenyx, in their spare time they enjoyed roleplaying…? What exactly was “roleplaying”? She was going to have to find out. Maybe she could join in, with the rest of the dragons training alongside her. “What do you think Callis is going to have us do today?” asked one of Galina’s friends, Aerilyn. She was also training with Callis. Aerilyn had joined the clan a while ago as an outsider, but had quickly become accepted by Siltaria and after adjusting to the wild nature of the Windsinger’s territory, had become fast friends with everyone. “I don’t know. Yesterday he had us split up and hunt, which is where Aio had his nasty injury. Maybe today we will all do something together?” “I hope so,” said Aio roughly. “Fortuna may have patched me up after that but I still need to make sure I rest my shoulder.” Galina sighed as she saw the bundle of bandage wraps around Aio’s left shoulder where he had been slashed by a Scythe Kamaitachi. Callis should have known better than to send them into the Mire. Callis, leading them, was wondering what to do today. Another trip to the Mire or any other equivalent was out of the question. As much as he hated to tell himself, he was in the wrong, and Aio especially needed to rest. Perhaps today they should go foraging instead? It was about time they learned how to survive away from the clan for extended periods of time…or at least learn to recognize what was edible and what was poisonous for when they hunted and foraged for food. Yes, yes, that was a good idea! Good job, Callis! The Woodlands would be an excellent place to begin such a lesson. He turned to face the three Pearlcatchers. “Are any of you familiar with foraging?” “Ah, no, we’re not,” said Galina. “We only have the basics, and none of us can recognize individual species on sight or by smell.” “Good, good then! Well, as I said earlier, one of the jobs of the warriors of the clan isn’t just to fight and defend, but to gather resources and find food for the elders and the young ones. So when we aren’t on guard duty, we’re often out and about on gathering trips, and sometimes groups will even organize to go on multi-day expeditions! So let’s spend the next few days focusing on that…especially so Aio can heal.” “Sounds like a plan to me, Callis,” said Aio. “Thanks.” Would this be the start of a renewed relationship between Callis and his three apprentices? He sure hoped so. And he hoped especially that he could begin to make up for his past mistakes. Bonney, you are right as always.
