Notes~
  • started out as a plague marauder and was incredibly selfish and evil; joined a band of like-minded bandits and thieves
  • betrayed his clan and sold them out, so they threw him into the Wyrmwound, where his body became the grotesque and mangled form it is today
  • was found by Ransom when the latter was on an outreach mission and brought back to be healed by Kya
  • joined the clan as a protector since he was a really talented warrior, but did not have a change of heart for a very long time
  • met Lenore, became her inseparable big brother figure; still has rough edges but he's doing a lot better now that he's found someone to care about

Lore~

Malady was a dragon proud of his reputation. From the moment the little green spiral broke through the shell of his egg and began squabbling with his siblings, he was a perfect plague born dragon. A rough and tumble personality and a joy for the brutal wilds of his home. He was a born desperado, picking fights, stealing food, and absolutely living for the stereotypical plague lifestyle and everything that came with it.

As Malady got older, he sought out a new clan. When he passed his adolescence, he joined a group of like-minded brutes… they shared his love of combat and hunting, so he fell right into their lives. He fit in perfectly among the killers and the snakes. They were all cruel to one another, and Malady was happy to claw his way through the ranks and make a name for himself. Unfortunately, he’d go on to make one fatal mistake.

When a band of thieves passed by, they took note of the strong young spiral while he was hunting. He’d just made a catch when they walked up to him and surrounded him. Malady, an experienced combatant by that point in his life, expected to be attacked and dropped into a defensive position. But the head of the band walked forward and asked him where he was from, if he had a clan.

“I do,” Malady lifted his head, crimson eyes narrowed in suspicion. His pet, a bone vulture named Grim, landed on his shoulder with a disdainful squawk at the strangers.

“And you are their leader, correct?”

“I should be. Second in command,” the spiral wasn’t sure where the thieves were going with this, but he knew one thing for sure: he craved the leadership of his clan. He was the most powerful, most cunning by far, and the only reason their current leader, a fierce mirror by the name of Gorren, was in the position was because of the clan’s loyalty to him. Because he was the eldest.

It was then that the thieves offered Malady a deal. They would help him overtake his clan if he was willing to split the clan’s treasury with them. Knowing his clan was very wealthy, Malady had no problem with this, and he began formulating his plan to become a tyrant… as well as a traitor. He spent hours going over his clan’s battle tactics, giving away their attack formations so it was terribly obvious that the thieves would have an advantage.

So when Malady led them back, he expected an easy win. But he’d severely overestimated his own cunning, his own power. His clan had devised a technique, hiding different battle strategies from its individuals for fear of turncoats. And due to their immense size and power, Malady’s clan easily overtook and killed every single one of the thieves using surprise tactics and maneuvers that Malady had never seen. He was soon the last enemy standing.

“So you’ll kill me now, then?” He’d been battered and beaten in the battle, hardly able to stand up on his own. “Kill your strongest warrior?” He spat, and red saliva strung from between his yellowed canines.

Gorren stalked forward and latched the traitor by his throat, dragging him towards the Wyrmwound, which lay just beyond their territory. Malady had assumed he’d just be killed, but this? He struggled in vain and begged. His pride forgotten, Malady pleaded with them not to do this, to just kill him. But several more dragons bound his ankles, bound his wings, and they threw him into the acidic crater.

Malady doesn’t remember much after that. When asked, he’ll shrug and reply he doesn’t remember what it felt like. That’s only partially true. He remembers the stench of rot and burning flesh, chemical burning throughout his entire body. It was so overwhelming that he assumed he passed out. When he regained consciousness, he was still surrounded by the horrific green sludge, but it was not hurting him anymore. Not unbearably, as it were.

The spiral struggled against the current, and eventually he dragged himself out of the Wyrmwound and looked around. A serthis who’d been hunting nearby took one look at him and screamed in terror, bolting off into the Wasteland. Malady, shaking with the effort of movement, let his body collapse. The lack of the acidic material around him had left his entire body in a state of searing agony, and it grew so intense that he finally passed out.

When Malady woke up, he was curled up on a large tattered pillow, covered in bandages, with a fur blanket draped across him. Grim was perched on a dead branch jutting through the wall of the cave. He shook his head to clear it and looked around. Sitting next to him and humming gently was a maize-colored skydancer with a rat on her shoulder. Malady’s bone vulture was eyeing the rat as if it were his next dinner. “Hold off, Grim,” Malady didn’t tear his gaze away from the strange dragon. “Who are you?”

“My name is Kya, and I’m my clan’s healer. I think the more pressing question is who are you? And why did you take a dip in the Wyrmwound?”

Malady bristled. “My pack betrayed me,” his voice was soaked with vengeance. In the moment, he fully believed his own lie.

“I’m sorry to hear it,” Kya said earnestly, offering him a canteen of clean water. “Our ambassador was on an outreach mission when he found you. I did my best to ease the pain of your wounds, but sadly, I can’t do anything about your scales… or your eyes. I’m very sorry.”

Malady cocked a brow at her. “What do you mean?” Sure, his eyes had been itching and he couldn’t see quite clearly, his body was still in pain, burning with every movement he made. But he didn’t feel that bad. Kya turned a piece of reflective glass on him. And he saw exactly what the Wyrmwound had done to him.

His body was mangled, most of his scales melted away into nothing. His eyes were nothing but a group of horrible pustules and veins. He recoiled at the image in shock. “I-” For the first time in years, he was rendered speechless.

Kya placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, a touch so light he barely felt it. “It’s going to be okay. You can stay with us as long as you need to.”

And she left Malady alone to his anger. He stayed with the dragons of the Twisted Reach as he’d been offered, and due to his natural aggression and aptitude for battle, he took up a mantle as their protector. He was spiteful and didn’t seem to care much for his clanmates, only taking residence here in the interest of his own survival.

Lenore took a special liking to him, however. Even despite him trying to act as if he didn’t care, she and Malady were fast friends, and he found himself very protective over her and vice versa. He was tasked with protecting the clan and keeping Ruse in check, a dragon similar to him in many ways, having been shadetouched for far too long. They were quickly and reluctantly close despite Ruse's odd personality and outbursts. Malady adjusted well to this new life and over time, some of the sharp edges were smoothed over, but he has a long way to go, and he knows that.
