Rusted Chain
In the dark belly of the sewers you reign, countless minds linked together in the same quest for glory. Flowing down through the cracks in a tide of fur and bone. All moving in harmony, reveling in the comfort of togetherness, but frequently disturbed by sounds from overhead, the thundering footsteps of multiple scaly gods. “Something must be done,” you decide; the heavens are far up, but not out of reach. Will you make it up there? Will you make it yours? The tide flows ever higher.



Dragonkind—as big as the whole world, as divinity. Yet what is a dragon, but a thing with teeth and claws? You have teeth. You have claws. Can you not be a dragon, too?
So many warm bodies, writhing together, melding. The click of many chisel-like teeth, glowing red pinprick eyes. “Clan?” comes the question, from many tiny throats. Then a moment of decision: “No—dragon”...for now.

In the world above the world, darkness aids you still, a cloak as good as any glamor, bolstering your disguise. It’s so much easier to get closer now. By the time they realize each spot is a glowing red eye, that the tongue’s a flicking tail, it’s too late, and they become one with the swarm.



Stronger, growing stronger. Everyone gets a piece. A chunk of fat, perhaps a scale, but all are suitable rewards for a task well done. All brim with that strange force known to the others as magic. It now runs within each of you, a new and mysterious tide. Stoking the fire, the power that comes with every meal.
“Clan?” The word comes yet again, whispering from many throats. Teeth gleam, grinning in the darkness—the answer this time is: “Soon.”
