Biography

he/she, demiromantic

The moon shone down on the dark forest. Kubos could hear the tide rippling a few feet away, but he focused on the small, scrawny red-and-black fae making her way across the beach, dragging a massive, bleeding pearlcatcher.
Odette.
He grimaced slightly. Odette was a kind dragon, slightly on the catty side, but was always sweet to those who needed her kindness.
It was a shame she had been born to his clan.
The elders were cruel, punishing any thoughts other than the ones they'd entertain, and would blame anyone who had displeased them for the horrible luck they regularly suffered.
Odette was one of these dragons, and after years of cruelty, she ran. and Kubos and Orla were sent after her.
Kubos and Orla were Catchers, specifically trained to catch those who ran. It was forbidden to speak to a Catcher unless you were their partner, so Kubos and Orla spoke to none but each other. Despite that, Kubos and Orla had noticed that Odette was sweet, with her air of sugar and spice and the poems she wrote.
but then she ran.
She had run to the edge of the island they lived on, the island in the Tangled Wood but on the Sea of a Thousand Currents, when Orla got her.
Kubos watched as Orla grabbed the unsuspecting pearlcatcher and stabbed her leg in such a way that made it hang away from the rest of her body, But Odette did something no pearlcatcher had done before.
She dropped her pearl.
Orla watched, shocked, as the beautiful, weirdly large pearl rolled into the surf and floated.
And Kubos watched as Odette reached up and ripped her front claws across Orla's eyes. The Skydancer screeched, dropping the dragon to grab her eyes, and keeled over.
"Get her!" Orla screamed, clutching her eyes. "I'll be fine! Get her!"
"It's fine, Orla. She'll bleed out before she gets anywhere. We might as well just wait for her to die," Kubos said, getting up and stretching out his legs. "Besides, we need to make sure your eyes are okay." or they'll make me kill you, were the unspoken words between them.
"You know, said Orla suddenly, "What if we just run away? The elders won't search all of Sornieth to find us." Her voice suddenly dripped with rage. "We're replaceable."
Kubos considered it. he had no one in his clan, other than Orla. If Orla left, there was no reason to stay.
"Fine," Kubos said, heaving Orla up and putting her arm around his shoulder. "But where do we go?"
"Simple," Orla said, standing up, wings beating to stand. Kubos wondered how long she had been planning an escape. "We have our bait right here."

Kubos sat, tail curled around his toes, nervously petting his pearl. He watched as the fae dragged Odette across the beach.
"Are you sure you'll be alright here?" he asked Orla.
"I'll be fine, Ku. just follow her to their lair entrance, and then we'll wander around there in a few days."
"I'm gonna leave my pearl-pouch with you, okay? If I'm not back in a few hours, scent-track to their clan and beg for help. We do need to get your eyes addressed by a proper medic, though, so I'll try and find one in the area. Be back soon!"
Kubos left the entrance of the tiny cave and began to stealthily track Odette and the strange fae from the treeline. He cursed his tough, reflective scales, but was glad that at least his shiny scales were dark in color. He pressed his stomach to the ground, his wings flattening against his sparkling belly.
He moved quietly, taking note of direction and area.
After a few minutes of Kubos following the fae, when she had walked by the ocean and to a waterfall, he saw another fae sitting by it. He was too far away to hear what they were saying, but he snuck forward and pressed his entire body into the black sand.
“C’mon, Khonsu, I had to drag her all the way over here, can we at least let Willow save her?”
Khonsu, the second fae, sighed. “Fine, but have you checked for weapons?”
“Yep!” replied the first fae, readjusting Odette. “Now can you gimme a hand dragging this big old lump in?”
“Don’t be mean, Kev. But fine.”
Khonsu waved his talons and the water raised, suspended in the air. The two faes picked up the pearlcatcher and half-carried, half-dragged her into the clan. Kubos watched as the faes disappeared and the water came crashing back down.
He landed a few feet from Orla’s tail and tapped her on the shoulder, and whispered, “I found their lair!”
She startled, but relaxed as she heard his voice. “Good,” she said, flicking her tail. “Next time try to not scare the living daylights out of me, though. We’ll wait through tonight, go to them, and do you think we should lie and have Odette tell when she wakes up, or spill our guts and have them probably kick us out?”
Kubos considered both options. “Maybe a little of both? Tell the biggest bits -our first clan, how Odette ran and we ran too, but not that we attacked her? It would be better to have people who like us in the clan so the won’t kick us out so willingly and maybe take us back.”
Orla wrinkled her nose. "Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. I don't think we should be begging, though, isn't that... undignified?
