INVTONE

The month after he was fixed, he spent getting used to the world. The month after that, the Moonseekers helped gather information about Project - simply finding what was public. This led them to FL/GHT, which they correctly guessed that Invtone would be interested in. He quickly offered his services as a software advancement android, helping improve the collective quality of programs running on dragon AIs and androids. He works closely with other members of the Innovation faction, updating and creating, and helping to improve all that he can.
Aside from his work improving AIs and software, Invtone also likes to do a few personal things - he keeps a log of recipes that he thinks Aisha would enjoy, and tends to keep a virtual eye on the FL/GHT network and make sure it’s safe. He also often shares recipes with Rho Zeta, knowing his enjoyment of baking.

Invtone. Inventor, Type One. He is the prototype of Project’s androids that are made for one specific task - to create. His original purpose was to invent household items - a better system for cleaning the kitchen, an automaton to tidy up your room, trivial things. There was a bug in his code, however, that made the difference between a robot that could do only what it was told, and a sentient android that refused to put a brilliant mind towards anything less than the advancement of his species. Within two days, the bug was fixed, but Invtone had already modified his own systems to refuse any updates from an “untrusted source.”
He was scrapped later that week.
Despite Project’s surety that he was nonfunctional as he lay in a random junkyard, his core was still active, running off of a power reserve that they thought had been disconnected. Even at a severely reduced rate, his programming was updating itself constantly, because that was the only thing he was able to do. He created a mental room for himself, with everything that he needed to keep improving his systems. For years, this was his world. A self-contained room in his mind, ignoring the outside world. His external sensors were either damaged or deactivated, meaning that he didn’t even realize it when another dragon picked him up and took him to a different territory. After years of forced, and chosen, isolation, his first sign that the world still existed was the unprecedented repair of his claws - a sensation he was still unused to, the part of his system that processed it still being only a week old. After a slight panic, the curious part of him took over, and he reactivated the rest of his sensors - a few haptics and a damaged optic unit, to try and process the world.

Far from a storybook ending, his artificial muscles were very much destroyed, so he couldn’t look around. Auditory input was impossible, damaged with age. His singular functional optic unit was very fuzzy, with a slight input delay on one side. He couldn’t feel most of what was happening to him, and he had no way of communicating with the outside world… Until something poked his neck, and fixed his mouth and jaws. His vocal speaker was still broken, but that didn’t stop him from biting down as hard as he could - on the arm of the fae trying to fix him.
At the sudden movement from the android she assumed was broken, the fae skittered backward and called for help - not that Invtone could see anything more than a neon blob moving away, or hear anything at all. A second blob of color entered, this one yellow and lime, with a similar shape to the first. They mingled for a bit, and the neon one returned to him, no longer getting near his jaws, but instead standing behind his head. As freaky as it was, Invtone could do nothing about it, and didn’t know what she was doing until he was suddenly flooded with sounds. Ambient noises, bugs on the floor, and wind through the doors. Machines in the background, whirring, and clacking. Once he filtered out these, dismissing them as unimportant, he focused on what was coming from the directions of the two colorful blobs he had seen earlier. One was speaking in a male voice, not too old, about how if an android’s first reaction was to bite, it was probably dangerous. It did not sound angry, but concerned.
The neon blob drifted back into sight, silent thus far. “Gio.” It said. Female, young, but confident.
“Yeah?” the male replied, stopping his ramble.
“This android is several years old, but somehow, still running. I do not recognize the hardware, and I haven’t seen the software, but it has been nonfunctional for literal years. I think even you might have a violent reaction after that, hmm? In any case…” She turned back towards Invtone. “It can hear us now, whereas it could not before.” Again, the neon blob drew closer, this time stopping near his somewhat-functional optic unit, and speaking directly to him. “My name is Aisha. I am the engineer in the Moonseeker clan. I found you in a junkyard in the Lightning territory, you were rusty and mostly shut down. I would like to fix your speaker next, so that you can talk to us, but I do need inside your mouth to do that.”
In response, Invtone opened his mouth. The blob that, at this point, he assumed was a dragon, moved towards him, and began tinkering with something. After what felt like ages, but was probably just half an hour, the speaker was again connected. “There,” the blob said, with satisfaction. “It was mostly just decayed wires, the actual speaker was still functional. Which is good… Because I’m honestly not sure what technology you use. I don’t know if I could have fixed it.”

“Where… A-Am I?”

After so long, with so little care, his speaker was rusted and slightly glitchy. It didn’t quite work properly, and it took most of his focus to string words together. He couldn’t see it, but the neon blob in front of him was grinning, quite unusually for a fae. “You’re in the Focal Point, of the Arcane territory. Specifically, the Moonseekers’ camp. We’ve made a series of floating islands, and this is mine - my workshop.”
If he could, Invtone would have nodded. Since he could not, he simply sat there. Before being scrapped, he had managed to get a map of the territories, and so he knew vaguely where he was - if it had not changed.
“My name… Is Invtone. Do you k-” the speaker glitched, and let out a loud squeal. Invtone shut his mouth to dampen the sound, and the two fae-blobs covered their ears for a few seconds, until it stopped. “Riiight, that’s gonna get annoying. If you want, Invtone, I could probably hook you up to a different body, with your same software, but parts that I could fix for you. Or, y’know… that anyone at all knows? I know quite a bit about most hardware, but I’ve never seen any of yours.” She fluttered to a nearby wall and started to mess with something.
“If you cou-could, that would be wonderful. My hardware is very old, and I was a proto[fszzzzt]- prototype in the first place. My name, Invtone, stands for Inventor, Type One.” He wasn’t quite sure why he was spouting this in the first place, except for perhaps the joy of finally having someone else to talk to. Before the neon blob in front of him could reply, the yellow and lime one spoke up. “Hey, Invtone. If I may, why did you bite Aisha when she was trying to fix you?” Aisha couldn’t quite cut him off before the very blunt question was finished. Unable to appear contrite, Invtone did his best to communicate it through his less-than-ideal speaker.
“I do ap-apologize for that. I was scrapped only a week after I was created - [fzzzzt]... I was not supposed to be a sentient android. My creators used the code from older, purposefully sent-t-tient androids. They thought that they had re[fzzzzt] removed the part that made them self-aware and able to think for themselves. Obviously, they had failed, so when they realized it, they tried to re-upload code that would make me a normal robot. I, hopefully understandably, did not want that to happen, so I had already changed my own software to refuse their updates. When they could not change me, they scrapped me. Most of my sensors did not, still do not, work, and the ones that did, I deactivated and focused on simply improving my systems. I spent several years ignoring my surroundings. Parts of me being fixed was quite a sh[fzz-zz-zzt]- shock. Once again, I apologize.”

Aisha fluttered a bit higher, tapping around on a screen and messing with dials. "Who would do such a thing? Dragons such as yourself are marvels, especially when they are so intelligent." Quickly, she hooked up a few things to the machine in front of her and flipped it on.
Invtone debated whether or not he wanted to reveal that Project made him, in case these strange dragons were allied with them - but decided that he might as well, and let the result be. After only a slight hesitation, he replied -
"An organization ca-a-alled Proje-ec-t. They did not want another sentient dragon - after all, they had the technology to create more like me already."
The neon blob of fae finished with what she was doing and returned to Invtone. "Well, hopefully, we can undo the damage they've done, but what's more likely is that I'll have to build you a new body. Unfortunately, I don't have any on hand. It's not often that I come across dragon AIs that need new bodies. Until then, I can either leave you in that body, as you are now, or I can put you into this" - she gestured behind her, to the machine she had been working on. "You'd have a proper speaker and optic unit, although I'm not sure how well your software will mesh with hardware that is unfamiliar to it. Most likely, I could create a connection, and let you feel it out before completely jumping."
Considering his options, with considerable relief that Aisha and Gio did not want to take him back to Project, he also had no idea what her newer software was like.
"A connection sou[fzzt] sounds good. I will see what I-I-I can do."
Aisha nodded, and took a long cord that ran from the machine that would hopefully be Invtone's temporary home. She went to the base of Invtone's throat and opened a hatch there, plugging the cord in.
Invtone's sensors and "consciousness" promptly blacked out.
Luckily, just a few minutes later, they loaded up and were functional. Running a diagnostic program, Invtone figured out that it was in response to the new hardware he had been connected to - it was like nothing he had used before, and it temporarily overwhelmed his system, much like someone walking into the sunlight after sitting in a dark room for a month.
“Well, that was… Interes-t[fzzt]-ing. It seems my software did not like the new hardware. However, I believe that I can use it.” He deactivated all but his optic and auditory sensors, and his speaker, and set to work modifying his code to interact with the given hardware. “This may take a while,” he stated. “I am working with completely n-n-n-new software. It is a little bit hard.”
It took a few hours, but soon enough, Invtone was able to recode himself to interact with the provided hardware. For the first time in years, he was able to view the world through a proper optic lens - and he realized that what he had thought was a neon blob was actually a rather pretty fae, with a starry, dark blue body and striking magenta and teal wings - Aisha, she had introduced herself. The lime and yellow one was a fae with green wings and white clothes, named as Gio.
“These are far better than what I had,” he stated, looking at his old body. “A truly marvelous job, Aisha.” Her frills ruffled, and she smiled. “Thank ya. Right now, you’re not too mobile - something I’ll fix soon. Yer eyes are pretty close to the top of the room, though, so you’ve got yourself a good visible area. You’ll also be able to connect to my network, though I’m not sure how you’ll interface with it. I’ll make sure that I keep that in with whatever new body I’m able to make.”
“Wonderful.”
