Oh fallen star, though your body walks among mortalkind, your spirit will lie forever in the realm of the stars. Roaming traveler you were, until the Shade of Destruction brought you here, to the home of dragons. Though you stand earth-bound, your heart lies ever with the stars. You are but torn between two worlds: that of your birth, and that of those you hold dear. Star-watcher, your eyes move tirelessly through the heavens. There, do you see it? A shooting star. Now close your eyes and make a wish.
  • The music of the spheres is vast and profound, too divine for most mortal ears to hear. But you were surrounded by it from your earliest days, cloaked in crystalline notes and adorned in stellar glissandi. It wraps around you even now, cradling you as you dream.

You knew the notes once. Sang them, together with your brethren beyond the clouds. But now, as dawn steals in through the window and gently awakens you, the notes leave. The song is profound, the silence even more so: an ache that leaves you yearning for the heavens as tears glisten on your cheeks.

  • Come daylight, the world glitters in a shroud of newly-fallen rain. Leaves with scintillating drops, scales and manes gleaming in the light. Every dragon a being of radiance, revealed by the risen sun...

“But it’s so wan,” you can’t help thinking of that clear and omnipresent light. So fierce is the sun, so brilliant—yet it is one star in the vast cosmos. This world is beautiful indeed—but you can’t help wondering how it would look, bathed in the light of a million stars, a million suns. “Probably beautiful beyond imagining,” you whisper—just as you once were.

  • A storm approaches.

It swells like a tidal wave, driving all before it; even the mightiest of dragons must steer clear or cling to the ground. You see them rushing for cover, and inside you—

—a memory. Flight was so easy once. A beat of your wings, and galaxies spun past. Faster even than light, leaving entire suns and worlds behind. The end of the universe is fearsome to many; to you, it was not so. It was nothing but darkness—

—but you’ve encountered a deeper darkness before.

Windows slam shut. The lair is warm and secure, but you can’t help shrinking before the might of the storm. It rises as though to consume the world, just like the darkness that threatened to devour you nearly did.

  • You remember the fall. The chaos of it, the coldness...and most of all the malevolence.

Even black holes had not frightened you so, for all that they devoured everything, including light. Those voids did not hate. This one did.

Shade, it whispered as it gathered you into its folds, plucking and clawing and tearing at you. There was pain, but it was fully eclipsed by the fear. It drove into you like a sword, tearing screams from your throat. The fear of annihilation, not just of yourself, but of everything...

And lurking beyond, even more horribly: the promise of emptiness, of nothing at all.

  • You first made your mark upon this earth in the most direct way possible, by tearing loose from the shadows and falling upon the ground. The magic of this land changed you, stripped away your starlight and glow. Oh, small one, diminished, your bones spindly and frail. Wings too narrow for flying past galaxies, scales dark with the burning of your passage.

But alive, still alive, your stellar heart still beating. It is not easy to quench the heart of a star. It burns in you even now. Fly on, it tells you, though you are no longer surrounded by nebulae and the shine of celestial spheres. You must fly on.

  • Gravity brought you to earth; more powerful forces bind you here now. A clan, a home, mates, a child. The warmth of acceptance. The diamond-bright shine of love.

And you do love, fiercely, with your ever-burning, starry heart. You love as only a star can love, so truly that it outshines everything else....

But time continues trudging on. (Fly on, it whispers in your ear now. Fly on.) And you have learned that all too quickly, beings born on this world must die.

“When they are gone,” you ask yourself, “what shall I do?” Above you, the endless sky beckons.
Will you return to it, when your tries to this world are gone...or will you remain bound here?

The sky awaits your decision. But so does the darkness beyond.

PAST
SA3iSBj.png

Kylara was born in the heart of a dying star, far away from the world known as Sornieth.

She was a spirit, a swirling mass of stardust and gases. Some knew her as Kylara, others only as the Star Spirit. She didn’t mind either way; the only important thing was playing with her siblings in the nebulae around her home, chasing each other through solar systems and galaxies.

But Kylara was a wanderer at heart, and one day she ventured farther from home than she’d ever been before. She wandered through unfamiliar galaxies and around bright suns, each more beautiful than the last.

But there was a dark spot just on the edge of her vision. Curious, she followed it—a mistake made once but never again. For the darkness was the Shade, the destructive force of the universe.

Kylara ventured too close, and by the time she realized that the darkness was encroaching it was too late. Shadows took over, consuming her vision until all she could see was dark, dark, dark. Kylara screamed in pain and fear, fighting her way out of the shadows and into the light. Blinded by the pain, she came too close to a planet’s gravitational orbit. Too weak to struggle, Kylara was pulled into orbit–

And she fell.
