Biography

"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.
"

It was by chance that the historian found herself in the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. With a memory longer than most, she held many stories of history inside her but she was always longing for more. Her latest trail led her to a very small encampment of dragons that were nomadic. Presently the were set up just outside the Forum, their camp so well blended in with the scenery that she almost missed them on her first go around. The darkness in the Tangled Wood was such an alien setting. While the Ashfall Wastes had its own darkness about it, that was often permeated by the warm, ember glow of the lava that ran through the region. Here only bioluminescent flora and fauna broke through the gloom. It seemed the dragons here didn’t even deign to make campfires to light their nights--if it even was night. Admittedly she could not tell.

The dragons belonging to the encampment had a rich oral history. She’d learned of them in passing and wanted to know more. They hadn’t been easy to seek out, but now that she was here she was ready and willing to stay as long as was needed to learn everything she could. They were friendly, welcoming, giving her food and a place to sleep. They would entertain her for hours with their tales. When they were busy trading with the locals, the Snapper would wander around and take in the sights of the Forum. It was large and a bit ruined but beautiful nonetheless. It was just as she’d imagined it from her readings.

It was during one of these times that she first met the love of her life. She had sat on one of the lower tiers of the Forum, looking down into its center. The feeling of the place gripped her heart and brought a song to her lips, and it wasn’t long before a small crowd of onlookers had gathered. The lilting notes and beautiful words awed the crowd, and when she finished they applauded. She hadn’t even noticed. A blush rose to her cheeks and meekly she thanked them. Scanning the crowd, her eyes landed on another Snapper who smiled and bowed his head to her. It was love at first sight, at least for her. Though he left with the crowd, she soon found herself seeking his company during the off periods of her conversations with the dragon encampment.

It had been nearly a week since she’d met who she’d come to know as Shush. The encampment she’d been speaking with had moved on almost two moons ago, yet still the historian remained in the Forum, spending her days with her new flame. Sometimes they spoke to each other at length, sitting side by side, and others they would merely bask in each other’s presence, merely content to have a companion at their side. It wasn’t long before she realized she did not want to leave Shush when she moved on. Admittedly, she wasn’t certain she wanted to move on at all.

Late into an evening of compiling her research, she suddenly had a tug at her heart that had her gathering her things and wandering towards the lair she’d known Shush to inhabit. It was a bit of a trick to find the opening, but once she did she pushed her way inside. The Snapper was greeted by a hallway lit by glowing mushrooms and she marveled at these as she passed inside. In the center chamber sat an Imperial, idly gazing at her claws. She raised her head when she became aware of the historian’s presence and a grinned spread across her face.

“Are you the one Shush has mentioned?” The voice startled her and her head snapped up to the Imperial. She dipped her head before responding.

“I am. I was...wondering perhaps if he was in?” Her quiet voice seemed to take up much more space than she was used to, and she almost wanted to apologize.

“He’s back in his little hovel.” The Imperial crossed to her, inspecting her with a scrutiny the historian wasn’t quite used to. She was almost worried she’d done something wrong until the Imperial continued, “Where have you been staying?”

“Near the edge of the Forum, ma’am.” She dipped her head again, “I’m not from around here.”

“I should say so,” She laughed, a sound like bells, “My name is Meila, I’m the leader around here. You know, Shush is awful fond of you. I haven’t seen him speak of someone in such a way for some time.”

“Oh?” She felt a hot wash of embarrassment come across her mixed with nervous butterflies. She wasn’t displeased, however.

“Mmm, I should say so. Do you have plans to move on?” Meila sat in the center of the room, coiling her tail around her paws.

“I’m sure I might some time, but I need to finish compiling my research first.” She shifted, indicating her bag. The Imperial nodded.

“Stay here, with Shush. We’ll allow you all the space you need and should you want to stay…” She trailed off and winked. The Snapper shifted under the gaze before smiling.

“I will let you know.”

“Oh! Before I forget.” She sprang to her feet again in a catlike motion, looking down at her, “You need a name that fits my lair. You don’t have to keep it, if you leave, but if you say I’ll have to insist you do.” She circled her for a few repetitions before grinning, “Aha! I’ve got it. Lull. You’ll be known as Lull.”

And so it was. Lull finished her research and never even dreamt of leaving. Her place, she realized, was right where she’d come.
