Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Ren
I am surprisingly entranced by Ren, which is probably not a good thing since that's how he wants it to be.
From the outside, he looks the part of the most devoted type of acolyte. He wears all the right clothes, is argumentative while still being willing to concede a point to someone who is in the right, and has read hundreds upon hundreds of tomes front to back like they're children's books. He is the epitome of everything the scholars of the light flight aspire to be.
I consider myself to be unreasonably nosy at times, and even I was shocked at the revelation that everything about his public persona is a sham. Every last bit of it.
He could not possibly care less about unearthing the secrets of the world. Truth and debate interests him not in the slightest. Ren has exactly one goal in life, and that goal is a rather simple one: he will not rest until all of the people he has sworn to kill are dead.
With a photographic memory and one heck of a capacity to hold a grudge, Ren has worked his way into the upper circles of the light flight's smartest minds, and is slowly and methodically using his newfound influence to pick off those who have wronged him. He's largely viewed as someone to be respected, someone whose name can get the dragons of this world the answers and results they're looking for, and that is always what leads to their downfalls.
He works fairly closely with Magdalena and her vast knowledge of poison-making, since even he cannot bring himself to trust Enosora with such things. There's also rumors that flit in from time to time that Ren holds some sort of attraction to her, but I generally wave them off as inconsequential since he's not likely to form any lasting bonds while he's in the middle of what he's worked his entire life to achieve.
It's a fascinating thing, watching him play the snobs and intellectuals of this world like a fiddle.
Out of curiosity, I asked Impulse if he knew anything about Ren's backstory with his hated individuals (he had no clue, only being able to tell me that all of Ren's enemies were stupidly powerful, and Ren himself always keeps his mouth tightly shut on the matter) and how far he was from completing his goal. Impulse told me that by his count, there were anywhere from forty to fifty dragons in total, and that Ren had killed at least fourteen of them in person and potentially up to three more using more indirect means.
He also reassured me that when the time came and they were all disposed of, the entire clan would likely be aware of Ren's resulting jubilation.
...The fact that he specified "when" and not "if" makes me wonder how much of Ren is still hidden under a façade that I may never see past.
