Rán was found as an abandoned egg when Tillandsia was training recruits for the Shadowbinder's service. Her egg was found submerged instead of floating like Water eggs are supposed to do. It is unknown how long her egg was underwater.

Irulan took the egg to hatch it herself, and adopted and raised Rán. Although she hatched as a Mirror dragon, she initially chose to become a Skydancer like her adopted mother. She did not feel this was right for her and wished to become a Nocturne like the native dragons of her adopted land. Morgana was willing to oblige her requests. She grew into a capable and intelligent apprentice to Irulan, even if there is something... not quite right about her.

Recently, she felt a call to join the Veilspun Colony allied with the Clan. She remains close with Irulan, and thanks to her previous training, she assumed the role of Sage of the Veilspun Colony.

Strangely, she seems to have taken after her adopted Flight's tradition of playing tricks on others. She likes to get others to swim down deep with her, and will not let them go back up to the surface. The other dragons that have been rescued from her aquatic embrace aren't laughing at her “tricks”.
