Biography
Niall

Neutral Good
In some ways, Niall has more in common with the snappers of his native Dragonhome than his fellow fae. Like them, Niall has never been able to fly. When he hatched his wings were far too thin, and even now they would tear like paper if he tried to gain air with them. The rest of his body fared much better — his scales are rock hard and nearly impervious. Still, a grounded fae can not travel particularly quickly, and Niall has had to accept that it'll take him days to walk somewhere that another dragon could reach by flight in a few hours.
Not that he actually minds. Niall is nothing if not patient. And with all their flying around, other dragons constantly miss the natural beauty of things on the ground. And the beauty of the ground itself. As far as Niall's concerned, nothing can beat solid earth. What does the air even think it's doing, being invisible and mostly intangible? It's got no presence, no aplomb. And don't even get him started on the water. The boat rides he's forced to take to travel between the local islands are the worst experiences of his life. It doesn't matter how many trips he takes, he'll never get used to the lack of completely stable footing. He spends his time on the water curled up into a ball and pretending to be a rock, since unlike fae, rocks can't get seasickness. Niall wouldn't go through such torture if exploring the other islands wasn't necessary for his one true passion: geology. The unstable formation of the Isles means that geological formations are unique between islands. They might all look the same from up above, but with a little bit of digging it becomes clear that each is as different from each other as Niall's clanmates are. And nobody does as much digging as Niall does with his trusty shovel-trident. He uses it as a walking stick too, but shovel-trident-cane doesn't have quite the same ring to it. (Niall's no fighter, the trident part is for stabbing at the ankles of big dragons who don't watch where they're walking.) Of course, even digging holes is a dangerous hobby in the Starfall Isles. Sure, you can find interesting crystal formations and gem deposits nearly everywhere. But even rocks can get moody, and some have a nasty habit of exploding when rudely awoken from their subterranean sleep. But Niall doesn't fear the occasional detonation. (Though the repeated blasts have caused some on his scales to grow in an odd angles.) He fears accidentally activating the sort of crystals that can convert a regular island to a floating one. The ground should stay down on the ground where it belongs. Those floating islands are an abomination against the Earthshaker! Yet, there is a lesson to be learned from the destructive nature in arcane crystals. And that's about the power to be found in even the smallest rock. And if you put a lot of small rocks together, well now you're talking! No, this isn't about Niall keeping a hoard of rocks in his den. (Though he most definitely keeps a few thousand carefully categorized rocks in his den.) This is about his master plan to never have to ride a boat again. From his studies of rock strata, he's been able to identify the process through which the Arcanist's magic caused the Isles to rise from the ocean floor, and in many cases continues to make them rise to this day. If he can get the mages of Clan _______ on his side, he'll be able to create new islands! And with enough islands, Niall can create a land bridge all the way from the Southern Icefield to the Arcane mainland. Then Niall'll be laughing as he walks all the way across Sornieth. Well, that'd take forever, so he probably wouldn't bother. But it's the fact that he could that matters! From down on the ground, Niall feels far more companionship with the flightless creatures of Sornieth than most dragons do. Such as his pet lizard, whose bright blue colouration is naturally bioluminescent. It comes in handy down in cave systems, where having a light source that can walk up walls is quite useful. Now if only it wasn't such a glutton. It eats so much of Niall's food that it weighs more than he does, and yet it still expects to be given a ride on Niall's head. As such, Niall can sometimes be found stuck lying in the dirt until the lizard realizes that its fae ride isn't moving. He has to take constant trips to Bozatrox's infirmary, as her treatments might be the only thing preventing his wings from falling off. Even if they don't work, Niall still wants to keep them for vanity purposes. Niall like to think that their odd appearance, sort of like a dried leaf, is rather fetching. Spending time with another flightless dragon is never unwelcome either. Niall's skills as a geologist are more useful to the clan than it realizes. Marmorata needs his help to determine whether her fortifications will hold strong or break though the ground and fall into caverns below. Tomyris is grateful for any interestingly coloured sand deposits he finds; they're perfect for making interesting glass works. And nearly everybody in the clan can find a use for magic-sensitive crystals. Even if some of those uses are purely self-destructive. (Especially if those uses are purely self-destructive.) |
