"Leave me at once. I have had enough of your games. We live to be loyal, and those exalted to a higher cause, like me, must prove our worth. If you truly do know all about me, you will know I have risen to power because of my devotion. You could do the same!"
"There are far more meaningful ways to gain power than slaving away at the claws of a deity. Now that they are gone, why do you still choose to follow their ancient command?"
"It is the will of the deities," she insists. "We must obey."
"Is it the will of the gods, or your own dumb lies?" I hiss in retort. "Because the gods are gone. The world is ours, now."
"You know nothing of their power! They will find you, and they will destroy you." Her snarl grows fiercer, and I can hear the defiant love in her tight voice. This pearlcatcher's heart beats for her deity, warm and strong beneath icy silver scales.
I have been plaguing Katara's dreams for months now, and I know her well. She is by far the most loyal, refusing to heed my warnings. Each dream an alternative universe, a futuristic chaos in which the deities are gone.
The strongest warriors of Sornieth are those who serve our deities. Gifted with their elemental powers, they are the closest thing we will have to our all-seeing gods when it happens. Once, I was like Katara. A blazing warrior of the Flamecaller, loyal only to my flame ridden mother. But I learned, and I am here to pass on what I was taught.
One day the deities will be gone. Every fortune teller knows it, for it has been spoken in the back of their visions, and it plagues them. Such a fortune teller decided to do something about it. Hephia knew that when the deities were gone, however their end might come, we would need someone to protect us, and to lead us. That is how we, the dreamchasers, were born. We harry the most loyal soldiers of the deities, each dream invasion a desperate attempt to change their minds and make them see that they must prepare for a time when the ones they look up to are no more.
Though I am a high ranking member of our secret society, I seem to be having little progress with this stubborn pearlcatcher. Her loyalty would be a great asset to our community if I could just get her to budge... But then, she is a rather high ranking member of the Icewarden's council. I suppose we are equals, in a way.
Only time will tell whether Katara will ever accept the fate that is laid out for her.
