Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

Acacia did accept. But since her Second Chance, she has insisted that this body's original owner is dead, and that the being before you is actually the familiar's spirit inhabiting her body.

The more likely truth is that this impulsive, rather pliable dragon has merged identities with her new familiar spirit in an unhealthy way. Whether this belief was originally the familiar's suggestion, Acacia's misunderstanding, an excuse for mischief, or a Nocturne's penchant for mimicry run amok is anyone's guess. Whatever the claim's origin, she is so adamant and consistent that few in the clan now doubt that she sincerely believes it.

Spectre, as she calls herself, lives completely in the moment. Despite her claim, she is not a Mourner; she shows little interests in the wants of the dead or ways of the Underworld. It seems her familiar returned to this realm with a Celebrant's insatiable hunger for the pleasures of life.

Spectre indulges in modern trends, and reinvents old ones, with equal and unending enthusiasm. She can be rather careless, and others in the clan are sometimes left to clean up the mess. But as long as her appetites are mostly harmless, and as long as she is ready to invite others to the party, the clan seems willing to indulge. After all, most of us only get one life - and sometimes we all need to be reminded to make time to enjoy it.
