History Adan did not like to be alone. He had a habit of driving others away from him due to his personality, and as such he spent much of his time alone. They could not handle the fits he would throw himself into if he did not get what he wanted, the way the ground would quiver with each tantrum and fissures would crack and bubble with molten earth if he ever went too far with them. They avoided the dragon often, and it meant that Adan did not have any friends, nor did he have any family to call on when he was alone. The outskirts of the clan were where he spent his time, finding feathers discarded by birds and other dragons to add to his collection as it took his mind off of the lack of others in his life to give him attention and spend time with him. He often wandered far from the middle of the settlement, though no one seemed to notice or care. Even when he was in a better mood the other dragons were wary of him and what he was capable of doing. Some would appease him just to keep his spirits up, but Adan could always sense that this was not genuine in any way. He hated that, too. There had always been tales of an invisible spectre; a creature that lured one from their village into the tall grass and toward the woods to meet their doom. Often the victims of this spectre would take on a glassy look and move as if controlled by something unseen. There were few witnesses to these moments, but rumors spread through every dragon, even Adan. He often chose to avoid the tall grass, knowing it was probably just a fairytale but unable to ignore the chills it sent through his spine. He tended to go on his wanderings to the south anyways, and for the time being felt safe from this spectre. Sometimes he did come very close to it, chasing after a bird or cat as it slinked through the blades and disappeared from sight. So when he ended up in the tall grass one day, he felt his heart sink as the realization struck. It was just that the cat was so lovely, and she had purred the moment his claws gave her a scratch on the top of her head. Adan did not want to end their interaction, so without thinking he pressed into the tall grass and followed her quite a ways in. The sun grew darker here, whether it was because the grass shaded it from view or for some other reason Adan had no idea. His focus was on the cat, and as she weaved in and out of sight he kept on until he gave pause at something on the ground. Kneeling, he pushed away some leaves and stared down at the bones of a dragon long since dead. The sound that caught in his throat was a mix of fright and shock. It hitched just before he released it, turning into barely a squeak. Thankfully he did not topple when he jerked back, but it was then that he had that sinking feeling. He was utterly lost in the most dangerous place he could be. Adan scrambled back, the tall grass brushing against him as he tried to separate himself from the find. It was then that he heard it. The wind had been blowing softly until that moment. Now it was still, and he could hear nothing around him, save for the whispering. ”What have we here…?” the sound drew Adan’s eyes up to the creature that moved through the blades of grass surrounding him. She moved like smoke; tendrils of blue faded in and out as she moved closer to him. ”Lost, but aren’t we all?” he saw the creature step into the spot he had flattened himself into, realizing it was a dragon. His face must have screwed up into confusion, because a look even registered on the other, and she peered down at him with a slight frown. ”Can you see me, child?” she asked. Her voice was raspy, and all the more fitting for what she looked like. Adan nodded, but he also swallowed as he found an ounce of courage and pressed a glare toward her. ”What brings you into my home, child?” she then asked. She seemed to soften, though Adan could still tell she was just barely corporeal. ”None of your business,” he retorted back, folding his arms across his chest in a bit of a huff. The skydancer cocked her head to the side and took a long while to stare at him. When she moved next, she practically glided over the ground. Adan should’ve run, perhaps. He should’ve been a bit more polite to someone who was clearly dangerous. But Adan was not that type of dragon. He never learned when it was the bullies of his clan that would instigate his short temper, so why was this strange dragon traversing the tall grass any different? ”What are you doing here?” he asked. ”Don’t you know the rumors? Why would you want to live in this gross place.” Adan had found his courage, standing to his full height - and ignoring that the skydancer had much more on him - and kicked at the pile of bones on the ground. When silence answered him, he put on the strongest scowl he could in an attempt to look unphased by how the skydancer moved. ”What…” she started. She took two steps toward him, overshadowing Adan while also giving him a full view of herself. Her scales and fur were like a dark blue night while gold accented all over. Horns protruded from her head, which Adan was certain not how most skydancers looked. ”Is your name?” ”Adan,” he answered, too enthralled with how her scales looked like stars to realize how easily he had offered his name up to her. She seemed to nod at the answer. ”I think I shall keep you, Adan,” she decided, bringing him out of his thoughts. He blinked at her. ”Wait a minute, don’t I get a say?!” he cried, drawing a chuckle from the dragon. She turned simply and began to move through the grass practically silently, leaving only a hush of what could easily be considered a soft breeze. ”You may call me Tsumetai, little one,” she called in her wake. When Adan did not follow after her. She spoke again. ”Are you coming?” Adan scrambled after her, forgetting the bones, forgetting his clan, for he was no longer alone. |
