Biography
Headmaster Sigma
'Ambition can creep as well as soar.'
'Ambition can creep as well as soar.'
Sigmaeus Kall, known to most as Sigma, is the renowned and respected headmaster of Rosethorn College. Determined, severe, and demanding of respect, he has very little patience for those who get in the way of his plans. To wider Sornieth and the College's inhabitants he is deeply respected, known amongst mages for his many discoveries and mastery of his powers. He presents himself with a grave but knowing manner and has proven himself as level-headed and capable throughout his time as headmaster. He is a good teacher and can be relied upon for good advice and hard-earned wisdom. He is seen as righteous and serious about magic and will not tolerate its misuse in his college. Away from the limelight, Sigma is dangerously ambitious. His research into the magical qualities of the soul has led him down dark paths, which he has walked without hesitation. Focused entirely on results, he cares little for the consequences of his often disturbing experiments, which he has conveniently hidden deep beneath the College within the maze of the Catacombs. He is a surprisingly cheerful and enthusiastic character when his experiments or plans are going well, and extremely bitter and angry when they aren't. He has big ideas and a bigger ego and is dead set on seeing things go his way. Sigma has been headmaster of the college for years and has been unchallenged by any on the council that runs the entire institution. Much to his chagrin, however, is the fact that he was not its original leader. Although he was a founding member of the College, the title of Headmaster was given to Stratus, the oldest and most experienced of them all. He led the College well for a year until he met an untimely end when an expedition into the Catacombs went wrong. Sigma stepped up to the challenge and saved the young College from falling apart after Stratus' death. What led to Stratus' death in the Catacombs is unclear at best. Sigma would like it to stay that way. Although Sigma is usually kept busy by college business and his own research, he recently chose to take on an apprentice. Many aspiring mages applied for this unique opportunity, but ultimately he chose a young Light Pearlcatcher by the name of Quill. |

History
Headmaster Sigma: Leader of the Rosethorn college and conservator of The Catacombs. A secretive and ambitious Imperial, Sigma leads the college diligently and confidently. Being a good negotiator, experienced mage, and a competent scholar his peers see Sigma as a capable leader not only of the college’s research, preservation, and education endeavors, but also as a figure for the small, ravaged clans of the Emperor’s Wake who have taken refuge in the Rosethorn college’s various buildings and camps outside and within The Catacombs. Unknown to the refugees and most of his clan mates, Sigma has hidden much more repugnant aspirations than simple research within The Catacombs
Although Sigma has spent most of his life living within the Light Flight’s boundaries, his eyes betray his true origin. He has never been clear about his background. Most assume he is from some noble family of mages within the Ice Flight. In reality, his origins are much more humble than he would ever admit; Sigma was born into a tiny fishing clan on the Frigid Floes, living on the move as they followed the schools of fish and the shifting of the ice. His parents were not experienced magic users, so they were surprised when young Sigma showed a surprising amount of magical ability for a community that rarely produced mages. Sigma himself was more interested in magic and its history than fishing. He would constantly be plucking interesting artifacts from the ice or reading the spell books his parents bought for him. Eventually, they decided Sigma’s talent should be properly nurtured. He was sent to the Rimebone Stockade, where his parents hoped he could develop his abilities and make a name for himself as a scholar there.
Sigma was happy with this for several years. He was tutored in magic and the preservation of artifacts. However, as he grew into his young adulthood he became dissatisfied with his position. He had started to view the Southern Icefield as too remote and politically isolated for him to be able to study what he desired: The complex relationship elemental magics had with each other, and how they were connected to the soul. Deciding he should try his luck on the mainland, he said his goodbyes and traveled to the rest of Sornieth. First landing in the Windswept Plateau, he sailed across the Sea of a Thousand Currents before landing in the Sunbeam Ruins. While he had originally considered attending a college in the Starfall Isles, the Light Flight offered both proximities to other elemental magic and also his more archaeological and research interests. Personally, though, he had also wanted to get as far away from the Southern Icefield as possible and seek somewhere less lonely.
