A Tale of Fortune Lost

I dart about the breaking clan of Wanderers, my eyes wide as I try to comprehend what's going on. I know there's panic, and I can smell blood. I know the Pearlcatcher I've been fawning over has gone ahead to help guide others away, following the stars to find his way to safety as he always does. I'm hoping my good fortune will help me. It's been helping others, from what I can tell. I'm trying to find some missing hatchlings one of the mothers in the nursery lost when I realize I can't hear the others fleeing around me.

I look around, only I can't find anyone. No one is there. I look for someone, anyone really, but all I can find are those bony trees and the skeletons of the drakes before us. The skeletons of Ancients. Skeletons that honestly I should be part of. I was around when they were alive, after all.

I call out for the hatchlings as I search high and low, trying to find the poor things so I can save them, bring them to their mother and enjoy more time with Chamuel. It's all I ever wanted, and the only thing stopping that right now is this catastrophe. Then I find a crevice, and I spot a few small forms. Still forms, and broken shells.

I don't even get the time to react as something hits the back of my head, and everything goes dark.

icemidsmall2.png

When I come to, it's to whispers. Anger, disgust, and confusion swirls around me as I start to sit up, only to find myself in chains. I don't know what's going on, and I ask again and again what's wrong. But the drakes around me turn away. I even see Chamuel in the crowd, looking like he'd just been slapped in the face. I don't know what's happening, or what went wrong. Then, finally, someone speaks up.

"How could you do that to them?! They were hatchlings!"

Finally, I know what's wrong, and I'm horrified. I try to tell them the truth, what I'd found, but I was the only one there. I was the only one to see it. I was the first one seen with the poor hatchlings. I'm not surprised when they don't want me with them anymore. When they say I've lost my rights to be a Wanderer. It hurts to hear, but I can't blame them. I can only ask one question when the dust settles, and I find myself being taken away with the other Fallen Wanderers.

Who brought me back to the others?

I dart about my little cavern on the cliffside by the Observatory, scrounging for lucky baubles as I go. Multi-colored seaglass reflects the light coming through a hole in the top of the little cavern, dulled only by the sea of pillows and blankets on the ground. Of course, it's there for a reason. I've already passed out twice mid-flight, and I still remember breaking a wing on my first day that way.

I hear a chittering noise, and smile as I scoop up Beast, who's buried himself in some plush foxes. He seems happy as I cradle him, thinking about what I'll do with him. Then I hear someone clearing their throat at the entrance to my little cave.

There he is. Pinks and blues catch the light like a nebula as the Pearlcatcher walks in, pearl in his satchel and a Fae Ferret by his side. Belle leaps ahead, cuddling up to Beast with her own set of chitters as I just grin at my partner. Chamuel, the little light of my life, and the one who finally listened to me when no one else would.

He sits down on some pillows, making himself comfortable as I find a few trinkets I'm certain are a good match for him. He certainly seems to appreciate the gesture, handing me a little rose quartz in return. He tells me all about how he found it, out in the Crystalspine Reaches. How he fended off some Apatite Fishers to give it to me, and how he was sure my little hoard here needed some more pink. Personally, I think he balances out the lack well enough.

We talk as the light begins to sink below the horizon, adding oranges, reds, purples, and blues to my little cave. A gentle breeze teases the ribbons draped along the ceiling as I curl up beside him, content. Then he speaks up.

"Aren't you going somewhere for Brightshine, hun?" Oh, right! I haven't told Chamuel what I'd be doing! I don't want to, either. I want to bring home some flowers and chocolates, honestly. That, and some pretty little baubles. I want it to be a surprise~! So, I just nod my head.

"can you take care of Beast and the others while I'm away? No need to worry, I'll be back for the festivities in the end~!" Chamuel nods his head to me, then pauses.

"Take my pearl with you."

I'm surprised by this. His pearl is who he is! Why would he tell me to take something so important to him?! He smiles softly, as if he can tell what I want to ask, and decides to clarify.

"I want you to bring a piece of me along with you on your travels, hun. That way, you never forget that you have a home to return to." He gave a sad little smile as he added "Besides, if you never came back, you'd have already taken a piece of me with you. I might as well not have a pearl at all if I lose you."

I'm speechless at this, and I give him a little nose boop. Does he really want me to take this? He says that yes, he does. So, reverently, I take his pearl, wrap it in cloth, and put the precious stone into my satchel. This is what I'll bring with me. This will be my lucky charm. I look back at him one more time, that night before I leave, and he smiles at me.

"Remember hun, we're both seeing the same stars, no matter where we are~" I nod my head to him with a smile.

"And you are the most precious of them all, Dove~" I croon back. We share one more gentle embrace, and then I'm off on my adventure, hoping to bring back the most precious gifts for my partner, the light of my life.

I know I'll never get lost, no matter how poorly my fortune has turned. I have his good fortune with me in the shape of his pearl, and I swear I'll bring it back to him. Even if it's the last thing I do.

Honestly, I might be a little too dramatic about this. I'm just delivering flowers after all.

Day 1 Lore Here
~AlmightyAmu, The Meandering Market #345601

The clan Belial came upon first was unconventional to say the least, but not at all unexpected considering the nature of the task at hand. There truly was no more appropriate of a place to make a delivery than a bustling market full of products and patrons. While the vibrancy and noise of the crowded streets could be exhilarating to some, Belial found it a source of budding anxiety, what with all of the different factors to consider in his effort to stave off his perpetual bad luck. He allowed the comfortable weight of Chamuel's pearl, the best good luck charm he could have asked for, ease his fears as he approached a Spiral clad in gold, tending to the ledgers.

A quick conversation would reveal both that Midas was his name, and that he was the wrong dragon to be approaching for a delivery of sunflowers. He handled the ledgers, yes, but this transaction involved no money, and so it had no place in his well kept books. As the two were considering the most appropriate merchant to receive the shipment, perhaps the least helpful merchant to be involved approached the pair and promptly involved himself. As was appropriate.

The newly interested Banescale introduced himself as Absilite, and introduced his plan thus,
"Care to make your delivery a little more memorable? How about this: we split the sunflowers between us, head over to the game table, and we play for them. The game can be your pick too! Whether it be cards, dice, or coins, as long as it's a game of chance, you have my interest. Care to test you luck?"

Seeing Belial's hesitation, he offered to sweeten the deal. If, at the end of their gambling, Belial held more sunflowers than Absilite, the Banescale would buy him anything in the market, within reason. If Absilite ended up the winner, the Spiral need only promise that he would do his best to come visit the market again. It was a true no-stakes game.

With these words spoken, the mental war began. Belial knew that, with his luck, there was no way an experienced gambler would lose to him. At the same time, all the game truly permitted him to lose were sunflowers, which he was to deliver anyway. These sunflowers were meant to spread joy, and surely nothing would make the Banescale happier than having a companion to deal a few cards to! The promise of any trinket of his choice was just an extra bonus, right? Accepting both his justification and his place at the table, Belial chose a game of cards as his first trial.

Watching Absilite shuffle and deal a deck of cards with only wind magic was a sight to behold. The hand he had been dealt was also a sight to behold, for all the wrong reasons. The game continued with the Spiral growing increasingly more incredulous with each card; Belial may not have been a skilled gambler, but he knew a bad draw when he saw one. The first game was over in record time, and Absilite beheld his opponents poor luck with a laugh of his own, commenting that he truly couldn't have drawn any worse. It seem that the Eleven go to the strangest means to prove us wrong.

A few more pitiful games of cards and quickly lost sunflowers had the pair switching to a game of dice. Surely the Spiral couldn't suffer the same misfortune in every game the pair knew between them? When the dice rolled poorly they reverted to simple flips of the coin, becoming so exasperated with the process that they began to ask customers and merchants alike to flip on Belial's behalf. A losing flip each time, of course.

Absilite was an honest dragon who truly believed that luck favored all equally, but observing the Spiral from behind his pile of easily won sunflowers, that belief was growing too slippery to hold onto. Despite the constant losses, Belial played each game with grace and always had a laugh to offer the Banescale. Oh if only Chamuel could see him now, sitting at the table with only one sunflower to his name! Belial hoped he would find the situation as amusing as those at the market did.

They decided to round off the day with one last game of cards. Belial held onto Chamuel's pearl through his satchel as the cards were dealt and was bewildered to see before him a perfectly average hand of cards. This was the best chance he's had all day! The game continued and so did his meager streak of luck, drawing average card after average card. Never did the long awaited devastation he had become so accustomed to occur. In fact, to the shock of all around them, Belial had collected a winning hand.

He certainly would have celebrated if he had been able to retain his consciousness through the thrill of winning. Belial was prone to two things; bad luck and passing out. If it wasn't one, that left all the more room for the other to rear its head. 'Not the worst place for a nap, all things considered.' he thought as his heartbeat slowed to the feeling of sweet victory.

News spreads quickly in the market. It was not long at all before the merchants knew well the tale of the ill-fortuned Spiral who came to deliver sunflowers and obtain something precious for his loved one back home. Never to leave a customer unsatisfied, they banded together, collecting the things they though might make a suitable return gift. Belial awoke to this collection in a well shaded tent. Atop the chest was a note from Absilite, congratulating him on a game well won and wishing him well on the rest of his journey.
And so he went. Riding his spell of comparatively wonderful luck, he set out to make the rest of his deliveries.

Day 2 Lore Here
~GuardianDragonak, Willowlight Shadows #309079

Belial awoke to the face of a Skydancer, who later introduces himself to be Solstice, peering down at him. The sky and trees loomed above, tinted the colors of dusk as the sun fell closer to the ground.

"Oh. That's a relief." Solstice's eyes were strange, only made more unnerving by his near lack of emotion. "I was worried that you might've died already." Already? "Well. We'd better get moving if you don't want to actually die."

Once Belial was truly confirmed uninjured, the two of them make their way down the winding path Belial had been following to his next destination, while Solstice proceeds to tell of all the dangers of this area. The sun falls behind the mountains, throwing ominous shadows over the land and Belial brushes a talon over Chamuel's pearl, a sense of dread settling in his stomach. Wasn't this supposed to be a safe trip? His horrible luck must've been taking it's revenge for his one win.

However, when he brings this up, Solstice gives a short laugh. "You're not the only one. But somehow we manage." He's left to ponder this in silence until the forest clears.

The view of the village is spectacular. It was if the whole thing was built into a crater, sloping downward with strange and wild trees. At the very center, waterfalls spill into a lake. It glows with an ethereal light, and a barren island, carved with runes and swirling patterns, is right in the center.

Solstice wears an odd smile as he pulls down a cover over his eyes. "It's a nice view isn't it."

The two of them stand besides the tree that overlooks the village, chimes ting gently in the breeze from where they hang on it's branches. Eventually, though, Solstice breaks the silence.
"It is unfortunate that you missed your day here, but you may leave a few sunflowers at this tree. It's a bit special. I think it'll appreciate the gift." He spreads his wings. "And don't worry. Your trip out will be much safer, and much quicker." With that last word, he nods and glides down into the village.

There does seem to be something odd about the tree as Belial places some of the sunflowers at it's roots. Something warm, almost as if it's thanking him.

He turns to leave, only to find that he's already at the portal he entered through. He feels a little disappointed not to get another look at the village, or interact with other any members, but he finds himself distracted as he reaches in to touch his partner's pearl.

There was something in there that wasn't before. Odd.

Day 3 Lore Here
~EnglishRose, Clan Rose #306426

Belial closed his eyes and stepped through the portal, hoping that he'll get to spend more time at his next stop. He dropped like a rock, plummeting down towards the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He hit the surface of the water with a smack, and suddenly he's surrounded by water and sinking fast. It turns out he's not a great swimmer, and although he tries his hardest to swim back towards the surface he can't stop himself from sinking. As he realizes there's no way he can make it back to the surface he starts to feel himself start to drift away in another sleeping spell. As this starts to happen, he reaches into his satchel to pull out the pearl and hold it close to his chest, thinking about Beast and Belle, but most of all longing to be back at home snuggling up to Chamuel. On the cusp of unconsciousness, he doesn't notice a large shadow pass over him, but he did notice that he started to feel very warm, but he wasn't able to ponder it for long as he blacked out immediately after.

Belial awoke to the sound of chirping birds, splashing water, and the giggle of small dragons. As he opened his eyes what he saw took his breath away. He was laying under a large tree with leaves that looked like they were made of polished metal, and the grass he was on felt like a soft blanket. When he looked up he could see that he was inside a massive cavern. The sunlight appeared to come from openings dotting the walls and ceiling as well as small glowing orbs embedded into the rock. For a second Belial panicked, frantically trying to find the pearl, but he realized he still had it clutched firmly to his chest. Once he located his bag laying next to him, he plopped the pearl back in and went to figure out where he was. As he was exploring this enormous cavern, he heard the sound of soft humming emanating from deep within a grove of trees. As he made his way through the trees, he came across a large Guardian whose hide looked to be made of terracotta. He had plants growing out the cracks in his hide, and there was a small but old looking tree growing out of his back and shoulder. At his approach, the dragon turned and smiled at him. "Oh good, you're awake" the dragon's voice was warm and deep; it had a calming effect on Belial. "You must the dragon who is delivering our flowers from the Light clans. I am Rajko by the way. I am the Master Gardener here. You've arrived at Clan Rose of Rainbow Waters.""Nice to meet you Rajko. My name is Belial. Yes, I am meant to give you a delivery. However, I did not seem to find my flowers with my bag." "Ah. Yes. About that..." said Rajko "When you fell into the water above our lair most of the flowers had been... destroyed." Once he realized what the dragon meant, Belial went pale and started to panic. oh gods what am I going to do? he thought to himself. How will I be able to explain this to the clans who still have orders. Will I have time to go back to pick up more? Oh no oh no oh noo... Rajko noticed that the small spiral started to panic, and went to calm him. "Don't worry Belial. We were able to salvage seeds from the flowers and our seed sower Egg was able to work his magic. Come. I'll show you his handiwork."

As the pair made their way to the center of the cavern Belial struck up a conversation with Rajko. "So, Rajko. How long was I asleep? It hasn't been days, has it?" "Oh gosh no. You've only been asleep for an hour, maybe two. You know you gave our gatekeeper Izar quite the scare. He's the one who brought you in here. He said he was in the water watching the fish swim in the reef when he heard a loud impact on the surface of the water. By the time he got to you, he thought you had drowned. Luckily he's a quick thinker and was able to create an air bubble with the heat he emits. He fussed over you for a long time," Rajko chuckled. "I had to shoo him away after a while so he could get back to his duties. He sure is quite the softie for a gatekeeper." Belial ducked his head in embarrassment at his grand entrance to this new clan. "Oh gosh I'm really sorry about that. I tend to fall asleep at random times. I didn't think I would do it again so soon after a spell." "Oh don't worry about it," said Rajko. "We're just glad you're alive and well. Ah! Here we are. Look, your flowers are just fine." At that Belail turned his attention towards the clearing in front of him. He was stunned. Before him, were rows upon rows of beautiful sunflowers, almost identical to the ones he brought from the Light realm. "B-but, h-how???" he stammered. "It's only been a few hours since they were destroyed. How is this possible??" "I told you, Egg our seed sower worked his magic. He's been experimenting with growing plants to maturity within a matter of hours. This is his first full run-through with only seeds, and it worked!" At the sound of his name, a white and yellow imperial with brass adornments all over his body popped his head out the sunflowers. "Oh! Rajko! I didn't see you there! And you must be the dragon who was tasked with bringing us flowers. Well, no worries! I was able to make new flowers for you to deliver. There'll probably be enough leftover for you to take home to your clan too!" Belial just nodded his head, still at a loss for words for this fantasy land he had stepped into. "Ah I see you're still trying to wrap your head around all of this. Don't worry, that happens a lot to first-time visitors of the paradise. Please, make yourself at home. Feel free to explore here and the rest of our lair if you wish. Do spend the night though, the flowers really should be given a full day to mature, plus we want to make sure they are viable for longer than a few hours."

Belial spent the rest of the day exploring the cavern. He came across a variety of bizarre and peculiar plants. Oak trees made opal, bushes with singing flowers, vines that changed color when you touched them, and flowers that arced lightning between the petals. In the very center of the cavern (not too far from the sunflowers) was a pool that contained the largest and brightest coral reef he had ever laid eyes upon. The coral almost seemed to glow with color. There, he got to meet the coral gardener Berezi and his charges: various Merfae and other water subspecies. He was astounded not only by the size of the cavern but the variety of peculiar vegetation. He couldn't wait to tell Chamuel all about this place. During his exploration he also found a couple of trinkets and fun items to add to his collection. Rajko told him he could keep anything he found; just as long as he didn't uproot a ton of plants.

The next morning, Belial woke up refreshed and ready to head to his delivery site. He and Egg gathered more than enough sunflowers for the rest of his stops and then some. He had to stop and marvel and the miracle this awkward Imperial created. The sunflowers even seemed to shine like the sun had found its way into the petals. After saying goodbye to the Gardener's Guild, and stopping to thank Izar the gatekeeper for saving him, Belial started his journey to the next clan on his list.

Day 4 Lore Here
~Archerfish, ClanName #313726 ?
[sockmonkeygerald, Wanderin lair #266129]

The only difficulty Belial had finding the next lair on his list was navigating the tricky air currents to get to it, but several Wind dragons who saw him as he crossed the Plateau called out helpful advice until he got the hang of slipping from one airstream to another and finding the right ones to take him in the direction he wanted to go. Belial didn't like to think about how many strangers treated him more kindly than the clan that was supposed to have known him, so instead he just thought that Wind dragons lived up to their friendly reputation and put it out of his mind.

When he touched down on one of the smaller landing perches of the kite construction moored to a verdant spire and poked his nose through the tent flap, he instantly forgot about finding anyone to greet or seeking directions to the dragon he was supposed to make a delivery to. His nose seized him by the scent receptors and led him up-down-in-out around passageways until it brought him to the doorway of a busy kitchen, where he had to stop and stare.

"Order pickup hopeful or hungry?" asked the spiral baker inside who was doing three things at once with two legs and the end of her tail.

"I love your smell," Belial blurted.

"I know, isn't it luscious," the baker sighed, pausing dotingly over a whole counter of tiered trays full of some kind of pastry. Belial forgot about trying to stammer an apology and also about keeping out of the way and coiled up beside her to get a closer look. The tiny cakes looked heavenly, each trayful covered with a different artistically decorated frosting, and the aromas (none of them clashing with another) fresh and warm and rich enough to make his mouth water.

"Something you need?" the baker asked.

He looked up hopefully. "My mate likes chocolate...?"

"Very specific kind or just in general?"

"He likes variety."

The other spiral clapped her hands in glee. "You're my favorite. I love you. Any additions he doesn't like? Sugar limit? Allergies? Hard chocolates or pastries or both or...?"

"Oh, I can't take it home right away I have a couple more stops, so maybe nothing that will squish too easily? And keeps well...?"

They worked out a chocolate assortment that would make Chamuel gasp with joy, and the baker, Truly, got right to work. Belial didn't know whether he should go as far away as possible so maybe nothing would go wrong or stay right there with Chamuel's pearl to keep the good influence where it was most important—he did so want to bring home chocolates, and these were going to be so nice...

"Hi Tru, missed you!" another spiral sang as he burst in, looping over to twine necks in brief affection. "Whatcha doing need help can I cook with you I've already got the roux."

"Long as it stays on your counters, my pastries aren't supposed to taste like toridae," Truly answered, booping his cheek as they separated. "Calce this is Belial, Belial Calcifer."

"Sunflowers!" Belial blurted, abruptly remembering their existence. "I mean, your order, I brought them—um, you can call me Beli..."

"Fantastic!" Calcifer cheered. "Sunflower gumbo for the sunflower festival, how should I add them garnish toasted chopped stewed—"

"Taste one first," Truly said. Calcifer did, chewing thoroughly on a piece from petal, leaf, stem and seed before spitting each neatly into a little compost bin in the kitchen corner.

"It's bland," he sighed, disappointed.

"Then use them however you want. Calce thinks anything poisonous is tasty," Truly explained to Belial, who was a little bemused.

"Chile peppers are technically poisonous but everyone eats them anyway," Calcifer said cheerfully. "Nutmeg can give you hallucinations for months if you eat it by the spoonful. Hmmm sunflower and nutmeg gumbo no no something with bite ooh I know seabeetles! And maybe squid mm or podid do we have podid I gotta go catch one wanna help?"

"Er?" said Belial, tripped up by the sudden cessation of speech as well as being addressed, and distracted from the belated worry whether magically-grown sunflowers would have any odd effects if eaten. "Erm. Sure? If you think I would be any, I can try."

"Bring me some sweetgrass and any fresh apples you find if you're going that way," Truly requested, whisking her tail under a counter and bringing out several empty storage containers while her hands kept right on working. "Oh, or if you see cherries, I could do scrumptious chocolate-covered cherries... figs, any ripe fruit you see."

"I can do that!" Belial offered, eager to contribute to Chamuel's gift. He felt his mate's absence more than ever right now. Oh, but imagining the homecoming...

"Will do! Back soon, love you! C'mon Beli! This'll be fun!"

Belial clutched the pouch containing Chamuel's pearl, but... maybe sheer enthusiasm could tip the scale of luck to good? No one could be that upbeat if things didn't usually go well for them.

Day 5 Lore Here
~sockmonkeygerald, Wanderin lair #266129

Belial and Calcifer made it back battered, spattered, and on Belial's part vaguely shellshocked. (Calcifer was still singing a nonsensical traveling song.) Belial's hair was so full of muck it had dried stiff even after talon-combing as much as he could out of it. Calcifer still had muck left in his ears given his tunefulness compared to the trip out. Chamuel would never believe this when Belial told him about it. Who knew podids were that dangerous? Who would have guessed Calcifer was that tough? He'd cracked a joke when it came a hair's breadth from electrocuting him! It almost stomped Belial to paste when he'd fallen into a narco-nap while trying to sneak up on it from behind!

But they'd made it. It was fine. Once the adrenaline wore off Belial thought he'd probably even be stronger and more confident than he felt before. And they'd gotten the podid meat, and a nice variety of fresh fruit, and they were back to civilization, where there were baths. (Thank goodness for baths.) And safety. And everything was fine.

When they got back to the kitchen it was pandemonium. Truly was snoozing in a coil on the padded floor, incongruously peaceful, while approximately half a dozen faes flitted madly all over the room smacking counters with bowls and clattering through her equipment, all after tiny scurrying... mice?

"Oh no," Belial blurted, horrified—but they'd taken his bad luck with them!

(...Airborne lairs had problems with mice?)

An oven timer dinged. Truly straightened up, already awake, and blinked wide eyes around. The faes all froze, wings half-spread, claws outstretched, frills lowered guiltily. The mice darted for cover. One made a bold leap for a mixing bowl. Calcifer snatched it of midair.

Truly pinched the bridge of her snout. "Let me guess. 'Oops'."

The oven timer dinged again. The faes mumbled in the tones of ones who didn't want to be understood, something about experiment and specimens and accident, and extended limbs to snatch at the nearest mice while trying to present the appearance they hadn't moved. Calcifer nudged Belial toward the oven, so he went to turn off the timer (hoping that was the right thing to do), and then hesitated over whether he should open the door while there were rodents loose.

Truly noticed Belial's movement and hurried over to take over for him, which was a relief, apologizing, "I'm so sorry, everything's fine promise I keep all the ingredients sealed and I'll wash everything, not that anything like this ever happens."

Belial was just secretly grateful no one was blaming him. But when he glanced at the shame-frilled faes now forming up into an assembly line for dishwashing he felt guilty too. "Um... mice like peanut butter? If you want to lure them?"

"Oh awesome I got it!" Calcifer zipped to a particular cabinet.

"Plate!" Truly called before he could dump a glob out on the padded floor.

"Now everyone stay quiet," Belial added, rather uncertainly given the current company.

Truly held her pan up in midair with a tail mitt rather than leave it in the oven or trust it to any surface. Calcifer conducted some kind of incomprehensible signed interrogation with the dishwashing faes that seemed to be asking how many mice there were. Fortunately (did this count as good luck, when it was just a bad situation not becoming worse?), these mice were evidently by now inured to terror or else extremely hungry, because before too long the bait won out over the roomful of variously unobtrusive dragons.

Belial breathed a sigh of relief when Calcifer's claws slapped down around the last mouse.

"Sorry," one of the faes, a dull green and yellow one, offered while the rest stacked the last dishes. "...Snack?"

Truly hummed doubtfully. "Honeyed dormice?"

Belial couldn't contain a squeak. Admittedly they were perfect bite size, and if the finished dish was put in front of him he'd probably think it sounded good, but looking at their little live furry faces... "They're so cute though!"

"Hmwrh?" said Calcifer, throat bobbing in a swallow.

"...No. Take them away," Truly decided. The faes took the opportunity to grab the improvised cage and slink rapidly toward the doorway. "But if another ever shows up again you're eating them, and you won't like it!"

The faes slunk faster.

The dull-colored fae flipped a frill as if to say yesyes and repeated dutifully, "Sorry. Tea?"

"Yes, okay," Truly sighed. "I've got to wash all the counters and surfaces now, Calce, can you take the padding out to disinfect—oh, Beli, I'm sorry right did you get what you were looking for?"

"Sure Tru!"

"No, no, it's fine—oh, yes, we did! Lots of fruits, um right here, where should I put...?"

The kitchen, blessedly, calmed down. Calcifer returned and set up to start his sunflower gumbo, roping Belial in to help with all the many and varied ingredient preparation. Truly brought out new apparatus and began rendering the fruits into delicious-smelling jellied, syrup, or candied forms. The fae, Hinny, served them all cups of pleasant herbal tea individually brewed, though given the size of the spirals' cups compared to her each one was a lot like a pot.

Chamuel's chocolates were finished and safely packed up for travel that evening, but everyone insisted Belial stay and enjoy the gumbo he'd helped to make as well as the rest of the meal. When he finally left it was with a full belly, warm wishes and a tentative, almost-formless optimism—maybe, sometimes, even when things did go wrong, it could still be all right.

Day 6 Lore Here
~BlueStopSigns, Signs Clan #402332

Belial was greeted at the entrance to the Signs Clan cave by a tan and blue Tundra. "Hello, hello! My name is Finch. How was your trip?"

Belial yawned, then caught himself. "Long flight," he replied sheepishly.

Finch laughed. "Come in, we'll find you a room so you can nap for a bit." Belial followed him in. After several long and twisting hallways he was left in a small room. "The blankets are enchanted to warm themselves," Finch told him before leaving him to nap.

The blankets were indeed comfy and warm.

Sometime later he came to consciousness. The blankets were still warm but there was much less ambient noise about the caverns outside. As he rose he saw a small letter on the nearby table end.

Hello, Mr. Sleepy Spiral!
I stopped by to say hi to you but Finch said that you were very tired from all your traveling so I decided to leave you this note instead. A very nice lady who was here earlier in the week taught me to make bracelets so I made you one! I hope it fits you and you like it!
Corvi

Belial smiled to himself. I hadn't expected the joy we were spreading to reflect back like this. Life is always surprising, I guess...

Day 7 Lore Here
~Bxy26, Clan Aquaurora #498491

Belial found himself in a dark, rather foul-smelling cave. He had just awakened, but was caught in the throes of sleep paralysis. He couldn't move, but heard voices discussing him.

"I think he's coming round." A rather impatient, brisk voice.

"Yes. Are you sure he's not one of yours?" A fierce, masculine voice.

A deep sigh from the impatient voice. "No, he's not. There are other Spirals in the lair, you know, not just my lab assistants!"

"Just one." The fierce voice relaxed into a chuckle. "How am I supposed to keep them all straight?"

"Considering that the ONE is a flight representative, like yourself, and lives in your den..." the impatient voice sighed again. She seemed to do that a lot.

Belial made an effort to open his eyes. It didn't work. He hoped his package was all right.

"What's in his bundle?" the fierce voice asked, curiously.

"I haven't checked, Deathstrike! No sense in being nosier than I have to be."

"I bet it's full of sunflowers." Deathstrike seemed to be faintly disgusted.

"Oh." The other voice brightened. "In that case, it won't hurt to have a peek."

Rustling sounds. "Sunflowers. Just as I suspected. But wait, what's this?"

Belial's heart leaped into his throat.

"Great Tidelord!" the other voice exclaimed. "What's a Spiral doing with a Pearlcatcher's pearl?"

Belial made a supreme effort, and succeeded in jerking his tail. This got the attention of the other two dragons. He struggled to open his mouth, and croaked, "Please...it's my...my friend's. He said I could take it."

Something in the Spiral's voice convinced them of his sincerity. He gave a violent shudder, that loosened every muscle from the paralysis, but unfortunately knocked him off the table where he had been laid.

"Look out!" A purple Banescale shot out her wing to keep him from falling into the fire. She was the impatient voice.

A very-much-Plague-looking Mirror was looking him over suspiciously. Deathstrike, apparently. "I found you half in and half out of the water. We thought you might be dead."

Belial shook his head. "It happens sometimes. Generally in the most awkward of circumstances." He gathered his belongings, clutching his bundle to him tightly. "Please, what day is it?"

"The final day of Brightshine," the Banescale replied.

Belial let out a yelp. "Oh, my, I need to get going!" He pulled the remaining sunflowers out of his pack and passed them to the other two dragons. Deathstrike accepted them delicately, nose wrinkling as though he smelled something bad. Perhaps it was the cave they were in, which certainly smelled like a chemical experiment.

The Banescale took them eagerly. "They're beautiful," she said. "But where are you going, in such a rush?"

The Spiral paused in his headlong rush. "Home," he said simply, and the brilliance of his smile lit up the whole cavern.

icemidsmall2.png

Out of the cavern I race, across the many lands of Sornieth. Yes, sometimes I dropped from the sky, out like a light, but it wouldn't take me long to get back to my feet, clutching my trinkets and my Dove's pearl close to my chest as I travel. It's after the sun sets that I spot that little cave I know so well. Home.

When I fly in, I manage to trip over some of my pillows, and I'm so glad I can crash land on them instead of the ocean, or the cold hard ground. A pink and blue head shoot up at the noise, looking around. I look up into those watery blue eyes and let out a happy little squeak, giving a crooked smile.

"...I'm back?"

The Pearlcatcher tackles me, holding me close as he croons over me. That scar is new! I have muck stuck to my back! Why do I smell like a Toridae? And really, did I forget some flowers? Some seem to be stuck in my hair after all! I just coil around him, closing my eyes. I reach into my satchel and pull out Chamuel's pearl, holding it up to my mate.

"Please take it back before that bad luck starts getting to you...!"

Chamuel is quiet for a moment, then he closes my talons over the pearl, shaking his head.

"No, hun. Keep it." I protest, a lot actually, and the Pearlcatcher simply huffs in reply, shuffling some pillows before placing the pearl there like a little trophy. "Whenever you leave, you're taking it with you. You may be stronger, hun, but one thing hasn't changed. You're as much a piece of me as my pearl is. If I lose one, I'll lose both, or I won't lose anything at all." I stare at my Dove, my shining star, and I can't help but get a little teary-eyed as I hold him close, burying my head into his neck.

It takes me a few moments to remember something. I came home with gifts, didn't I? I let go, pulling my satchel closer to me. I fish about, then pause, telling Chamuel to close his eyes. Begrudgingly, he does. I begin to dart about, setting out the assortment of trinkets, baubles, shinies, and of course chocolates out for him to see, beaming from ear to ear. Finally, I settle by his side and tell him to open his eyes.

It certainly doesn't take him long to fawn over the new baubles. Soon enough, he's finding places to put them in my hoard, in our hoard, and after a little bit of help we're settled on the pillows. As we watch the stars through the little slits in our hoard, with Chamuel gladly sharing one of the chocolate covered cherries with me, I finally speak up.

"I missed you, Dove."

He looks at me, quiet for a moment, before he smiles a gentle smile, holding me close.

"I missed you too, hun."

I think my flower delivering days are done for now. Next time I go out, it's going to be with my Dove, my guiding light Chamuel. But first... we both really need some sleep.

This dragon embarked on a trip across Sorneith during Brightshine Jubilee 2020 from June 21 to June 27. He is one of many who are traveling to various lairs and clans in the hopes of spreading love and joy to those they encounter. When it's over, they'll be able to look back at the adventures they had and dragons they met and remember the journey they went on.

6RNCxQc.png . Belial . pUGLfcB.png

Belial is a gentle Spiral who really wishes his luck was still good, like it had been before The Incident at the Observatory. He doesn't talk about to too much, mainly because he doesn't have a lot of others to talk to about it all who don't already know. He's a lover of ferrets and doves, and cares for both within his sect of the Wanderers. He, alongside his mate Chamuel, tend to help with familiar upkeep when it comes to smaller familiars. He's well known for his near-death experiences outside of the safety of the Observatory walls, as well as the accidents that occur around him. He tries his best to help others where he can, however, and will happily try to fix a home in exchange for a shiny bauble or trinket here and there. Even a few flowers or some chocolates would do, seeing as he loves giving little gifts to his mate. When not venturing out for shinies, he's often resting his eyes, much like the ferrets in his care. Sometimes he even goes into the dead sleep of a ferret, oddly enough. More than once he's woken up groggily from a nap only to find himself in some sort of crypt or tomb made for him, much to his dismay. At least he gets free flowers out of it~!

Other Notes
This is his partner, Chamuel.
He has a Chocolate Ferret named Beast (Chamuel has Beast's Fae ferret partner named Belle).
He hoards colorful, interesting objects most wouldn't collect (glass shards, ribbons, cloth scraps, so long as they're colorful he hoards them) and he hangs them up in a little cavern in the cliffside of the Focal Point's outer edge.
He can and will pass out at inopportune times, and while he's only out for a minute or so, many drakes think he's dead (slow heartbeat, faint breathing, think ferrets when they go into a dead sleep).
All flowers, candies, and dove-related items are hoarded so he can give them to Chamuel on their anniversary.
He can and will do lots of stupid, insane, or outright dangerous things for one shiny bauble if he wants it.
