Down the clammy, narrow path, a fragile figure in red wades through the thick silt towards a hidden rivulet. Between the ghastly birches and bulrushes, she kneels and whispers hollow verses to the slumbering, black billow bellow.

The cacophony of sirens and shots hollers from somewhere, far away. And, while the silhouettes dance around her, unmoving, she prays to the murky abyss.

And, with the burbling, garbled sound, it answers.
