A whisper amongst the darkness, a blade slipped between the shoulders, an opponent felled without so much as a breath heard Like her namesake, Gamma remains undetected to the unskilled and uninitiated. Fortified defenses were but a small obstacle in her path when given a task to complete. Pinpoint strikes created exploitable weaknesses that were not even expected, and her fury would descend. Footfalls and wingbeats cloaked in magic and with senses highly attuned, her agility reveals no hints to the danger she poses to hostile enemies or unassuming targets alike. Silent but no less deadly - quite the opposite, actually - the Pearlcatcher thrived in subtlety. She protects her clan with fierce loyalty, quickly and ruthlessly dispatching of any harm that could befall her clanmates before the threat can even draw the slightest bit of alarm. Gamma finishes the job when necessary, but when her intuition tells her otherwise, well... that's where the rumors originated. A branch within the woods snaps, a butterfly flutters gently in the breeze, a foe subdued in a precise whip of magic.
The dragons from the Mirrorlight Promenade burst into fervor-filled murmurs, having heard accounts of those who survived what could only be described as a raid, it felt like. Scholars who were simply at the wrong place, at the wrong time, caught mere glimpses of what they, together, hesitantly decided was the truth. Like a spectre, the shadow surged through their camp in the Lightweaver's domain, its search fevered but calculated. A member of their travelling party was singled out - an individual who, the scholars relented, was known to be studying and practicing an outlawed branch of Shade-related magics - and disappeared without a sound, research and belongings included. They found themselves silently relieved, however, at their unharmed state, knowing full well that whatever knocked their party number down by one was more than capable of making them vanish, too. Over the years, the rumors gave no sign of dying out, sightings still occasionally reported in a frenzy to clan leaders and igniting the spark of curiosity and caution among not just dragons, but also the denizens throughout the regions of Sornieth. The more outlandish retellings were scoffed at for their over-the-top exaggerations, but the stories all had the same elements: a wrong committed, a Ghost, a target (or two), and the eerie quiet that followed. I was away one day and Alykris was tending to a clutch of ours as well as both of our pearls. He was attacked by humans. Hoping to disorient him, a breed change scroll was used against his will, changing him into a skydancer.
I returned a short time after, my beloved Alykris lay curled around our nest, holding our damaged pearls.
In a ragged breath, he looked into my eyes and apologized. "They stole our eggs. I tried to save them but I couldn't. It happened so quickly. They damaged our pearls."
Our pearls lay in pieces. The fragments of Alykris' pearl began to dim and slightly crumble. With his change to a skydancer, he no longer needed a pearl. I quickly gathered the remnants and created a layer combining the shards and pieces into one sphere. I handed the pearl back to him.
"We have always been one, you and I. It seems suiting to only have one pearl to match."
I let out a quick huff.
This wasn't supposed to happen, I mutter to myself.
I had gotten myself lost in the bramble. I can track anything across the Tangled Wood, no crevice or hollow is safe. In my rush to complete my contract, I had forgotten to properly prepare for my return. I belonged to a clan now, a sanctuary in which to return to. Which currently did me no good as I couldn't remember which way to go. Slight panic began to bubble up within. I continued on.
The scenery did not change in the slightest. That same panic simmered just beneath the surface.
You need to stop this, Gamma. You are doing what you do best: Hunting. Hunting for home.
I stopped and closed my eyes. My ears perked at each small noise. Each small movement. A light mist of rain began to patter, muting my hearing a bit. I opened my eyes again. Small glowshrooms began to open their caps to the rain, emitting their soft, eerie blue glow. In the distance, I caught sight of another soft glow, but of purple. Several baubles of violet danced in the light breeze atop a large twist of bramble. I moved towards it and let out a small whistle. The violet flashes out of sight.
Hello, Effulgence. Thank you for your guidance today, I bow slightly.
A veilspun descends from a bramble by my shoulder and smirks, his glowing whiskers dappled with fresh dew.
