SHADE "Mom, I had the dream again..."

Shade remembers little of its life before it was taken by Vivie, a Gaoler Seeker. It knows from listening to Vivie's conversations with her mate Kerie that they aren't its birth parents - its mother and father live in somewhere in the Starfell Isle, members of cult that the two Gaolers never speak of in tones louder than whispers. Shade thinks it saw its birth parents in a dream, once. They asked it to follow them, to be taken into the dark. There had been something behind them, past where Shade could see, many-headed and... writhing. Shade had told them no. It was afraid of what it sensed in the distance. And they weren't his parents anymore. On some level Shade is aware that it should have grown up by now, become tall and strong like Vivie and Kerie. Sometimes it could feel itself growing - not just longer and broader but deeper, its senses numbing as they crept further beyond itself into somewhere cold, black, and empty. But the feeling never lasted for long. Before it could get used to the disorientation, Vivie would come along with her ground pink dust and the world would settle back into place. As it is, Shade is happy staying in the nursery with the other hatchlings. Though eventually its playmates grow up and leave it behind, Shade knows that more eggs will hatch soon enough, and it can be friends with them too. Besides, Vivie spends most of her time in the nursery taking care of it, and Kerie comes by to play whenever he can. With the Gaolers always near, Shade knows it's safe from the world - and the world is safe from it. |
