When Glitz pokes his head into the room, his expression is playfully scrunched. In one hand he holds a fine brush; around his other wrist is a collection of hair elastics. “No,” Fractal growls. “You promised,” Glitz reminds him in a singsong tease, eyes fairly sparkling with merry amusement as he trots into the room and sits down on the bed. “You told me,” and he affects a poor imitation of Fractal’s deep voice, “‘Fine, Firefly, you can braid it one time when my antlers shed,’ remember? And I know you’re not doing anything in the orchards today, because you told Isi you had the day off.” Damn him, he had told Isidoro that when she asked. If he’d known that she was running reconnaissance for their partner, he might have fibbed. As if she wouldn’t have seen right through a lie, Fractal thinks ruefully before he heaves a sigh and moves to seat himself on the ground, his back to Glitz. Immediately the pearlcatcher’s hands go to his hair, deftly gathering it into strands and beginning the arduous process of brushing it out, one gentle pass of the brush at a time. Fractal finds his hair too irritating to maintain for the most part. He doesn’t have the patience to care for it the way Glitz always insists he should, and certainly doesn’t have the time or know-how to put it into elaborate braids. Trying to yank a hairbrush through the tangles typically leaves him with a sore scalp and a foul mood. But - and he swears to himself that he will never say this aloud where Glitz can hear it, for fear of encouraging him to repeat this process again - there is something to be said for this gentler touch by his partner’s hands. Instead of pulling at the knotted mess, Glitz seems determined to separate each lock out, bit by bit, and work at it with a light touch until the brush passes through it like water. It takes a long time, but it feels good, and Fractal finds himself lulled into a trancelike peace, eyes fluttering shut under the attention. Finally, Glitz presses a kiss to the top of his head. “All brushed out,” he murmurs, a low hush that doesn’t quite break the spell of calm that seems to have been laid over Fractal. “All that’s left is to braid it. You’re very handsome like this, you know.” Fractal contemplates making a sarcastic remark in response, but somehow he can’t bring himself to speak up, let alone say something rude when his partner has already spent so much time taking care of him. Instead he simply tilts his head back and raises his chin so that he can peck Glitz on the mouth, once, before settling back against his legs and closing his eyes again. Glitz goes back to work, separating locks of Fractal’s hair and weaving them together. One at a time, completed braids fall over Fractal’s shoulders as he basks in the sensation of being cared for, consciousness drifting. At last, Glitz touches his shoulder once. “Hey, love,” he says, still speaking softly. “You’re all done.” Fractal blinks his eyes open, and it’s like coming out of a deep sleep. He draws in a deep breath, then releases it slowly. “Thank you,” he rumbles. Glitz drapes his arms around Fractal’s shoulders and rests his chin atop his head for a moment. “Anytime, my dear,” he says. “Anytime.” |
