Biography

ORIENTATION: bi
OCCUPATION: doctor (ex-assassin)
PERSONALITY: kind, witty, resourceful, practical, and loyal. capable and brave. she's very open-minded and adventurous, whilst still possessing steely determination to do what is right.

~

Onyx was born an assassin.

At least that's what her trainers told her. That they found her egg abandoned on the streets, left to the cruel elements and the oncoming winter. That they picked her up and raised her out of the kindness of their hearts. And an assassin she became.

Onyx fought tooth and claw to become the fighter they wanted her to be. They pushed her until she cried and trained her until she couldn't. She perfected the blade, mastering both claw-to-claw combat and long-range conflict, learning the trick to poisons, knowing how to observe and study other dragons, training to be quick on her claws, spending endless nights training and battling with the others. There was nothing she didn't master and nothing that could stop her. Onyx wanted to be the best- no, she needed to be the best.

At last, all her hard work had paid off. All the years of pain had come to this. She had made a name for herself in the underbelly of the Cloudscrape Crags. She was assigned to a mission in the Hewn City, somewhere east of the continent. The imperial was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement to finally be out in the world. This was her chance to prove herself.

Her task was simple- to identify and follow a target back to her home before swiftly killing her and disappearing without a trace. Easy, compared to what the others often boasted about doing. A quick kill and go job.

Almost flawlessly, Onyx tracked down her target- a slender golden-eyed skydancer- in a grimy tavern packed with other dragons. She waited patiently as the female skydancer stayed till very late, diligently serving and entertaining the customers. Everything about the tavern was horrible, but Onyx was unconcerned and remained aloof. Or so she thought.

She followed the target home, sticking to shady alleys and rooftop passages, using the vastness of the night to her advantage just like she'd been taught. Everything was going perfectly to plan. The skydancer entered her dingy house (it could barely have been called a house), and Onyx slipped in through the rickety top window. All she had to do was wait for the skydancer to retire to bed and slit her throat while she slept.

But- what was that? There was movement in the shadows. A little closer. There- a small claw waving up at her from deep in the darkness.

It was a tiny skydancer dragonet.

Onyx stumbled back, utterly shocked. None of her training prepared her for this. There was a dragonet in a cot. Judging by the female's features, it was the daughter of her target. She couldn't kill her mother- that was wrong, right?- and even if she did, she'd probably have to kill the dragonet too. No witnesses. No loose ends. That's what they were taught.

The skydancer appeared in the doorway.

For a moment that lasted a lifetime, neither dragon moved. Then suddenly the slender skydancer flung herself in front of her blubbering dragonet, shaking uncontrollably and spreading her wings with determination to protect her daughter.

She couldn't do it.

Onyx fled into the night, back out the rickety window, abandoning her mission. She knew she would have hell to pay when she got back to headquarters, but it didn't matter. Why did they want her to kill that skydancer? She couldn't understand. Nothing she thought of made it right. Everything she'd trained for... was it evil? Bad? What- what was she doing, really?

So the imperial escaped under cover of the boundless darkness, just like her trainers had taught her to do before she could even fly. It was impulsive, and it was stupid, but it was the best decision she'd ever made. Onyx was determined not only to be her own dragon but to also make a name for herself doing something real- something good. Something that she was truly happy doing. It was freedom so rare- and unbelievably in her grasp- that it felt almost magical.

With only the pale light of the stars overhead and the endless expanse of black night wheeling into dawn, Onyx flew until her wings gave out, away and across the continent. She didn't really care where she ended up. She'd work that out later.

For the first time in her life, Onyx was free.
