I didn’t have much to pack up. A dagger, just in case. A few coins. Some food. Just the same as always, I suppose. Why is my heart beating so fast? Why do I seem rooted to the ground? I have to practically force myself to leave. I’m not entirely sure why. Perhaps it’s that I’m leaving at night. Before I would always leave in the morning. It makes no sense, but it’s the only thing I can think of, so I stick with that. The night air is refreshing, and I feel a little better as the cold wakes me up. It’s starting to snow a little bit and the flakes dance in the moonlight. Maybe it’s sappy, but I wish I could be a snowflake dancing in the wind like that. I reach out and catch one on the tip of my claw. It sparkles a little bit before it disappears. A few hours later I’m walking into a town. Actually, “town” would be a generous word for it. A few houses on a riverbank. One market stall selling apples and game. A run-down fishing dock with a couple of boats tethered to it. But you get used to such things when you travel as much as I do. The sun is rising over the horizon and I see the residents begin to wake and start their day. I’m being stared at. I can’t blame them, it’s not as if they’re getting a lot of traffic. I clear my throat and ask “Would anyone tell me of the nearest place I might stay a night or two?” Someone pipes up “You can stay at my place. There’s not much but I’ve got a bed and some stew to warm you up.” There’s quite a lot of whispering then. The residents eventually clear out and resume what they were doing. I assume that means I’m free to stay. I can see the one who spoke now, a tiny old tundra. I follow her into her house. It’s constructed out of logs and stone and river clay but expertly designed. Even in the dead of winter it’s not letting any heat out. Her stew, frankly, is horrible, but the gesture is kind so I keep quiet. It’s only hitting me now how tired I really am. Now that I’m out of the cold I remember how it felt to leave and I want to throw up a little bit. I’m not homesick, not really- but I wish I was back in that little home. “Are you all right, sugarplum? You look a bit sad.” my host says. “I’m fine, thank you. Just a bit tired.” “Well then, you should be heading downstairs. I’ve got an extra bed down there. Would you like some more stew?” “No, thank you.” I sink into the tiny bed. I really should have thanked her. I dream about snowflakes. A noise startles me out of my sleep and makes me jump. I stumble to my feet and look about. “Raidoalth?” He looks a bit embarrassed. “Did I startle you? I’m sorry.” “Not at all. But I must ask why you’re here?” My tone is calm but I’m panicking again. He mutters something so quiet I can’t hear it. “I… followed you here.” “I can see that.” “Sorry. Because- well. I couldn’t stop thinking about you. But not in a stalker way, I promise. Sorry, I’m not really helping, am I? But… you know already, right?” At this point I’m a bit annoyed. “I actually don’t.” Oops, that came out much ruder than I intended. “What?” He asks. “What are you talking about?” It takes a few minutes for him to finally spit out what he’s trying to say. “I love you. I mean, I know I only knew you for a month, and I’m really sorry for following you and I know this is out of the blue but I would beat myself up about it forever if I didn’t at least try.” I open my mouth to say something, close it, and open it again. I know why it was so hard to leave, and why I’ve been a sad sappy mess. I hope I’m right. “I love you too.” |
