Biography

Malleable Graybricks
_____.__________

The sword goes in. The sword comes out. The enchanted silver does its work, and then the beast is no more.

Raelfiel wipes the flat of it on the tattered rags that clothe the body and calls out to the villagers hiding in the hills.

They approach like ants--slowly at first, then the whole colony gathers around. One villager breaks free from the rest, falling upon his knees as he comes up to where Raelfiel stands over the body. A flicker of recognition crosses Raefiel's face: this was the father of the wraith that they had just slain.

Before he can touch the smoking corpse, Raelfiel holds out their sword. "No. We need to burn it, or this could happen again."

He looks up at them, tearful and broken, and says, "But she... she's my daughter. There are burial rites we can conduct, I--"

"Was," says Raelfiel, and the steel in their eyes never dims. "She was your daughter. Burn the body. I will not ask again."

He stares at them.

Raelfiel stares back. Finally, the grieving father tears his eyes away, weeping quietly. A few villagers emerge to help him up.

Satisfied, they turn, calling out to the crowd: "Bury the remains beneath an ash tree and salt the ground around it. I shall return in a month to ensure it is dead."

There is nothing remotely soft about Raelfiel. Everything about them, from the ramrod line of their back to the imposing longsword they carry, screams devotion and unwavering faith. When they speak, dragons lean in to listen; their voice is as alluring and powerful as the heat of the Flamecaller's forge.

They are a paladin, through and through.

Raelfiel's been in the business longer than most, and they bear the evidence well: an old scar tears its way across their chest and a still-healing gash on their left hindleg drips black blood when they approach hallowed ground. Not to mention the countless cuts, scrapes and bruises they've gained over the long years.

The scars, however, run bone-deep. Over the years, Raelfiel has shed their innocence as a snake sheds its skin. Beneath it lies smooth, shiny scales--a shield of uncaringness and cold practicality.

Idealistic paladins are often dead ones. Remember that, the next time you catch a glimpse of that shining armour and impressive sword--remember it, and get out of their way.
