There were three eggs in the Spiral pair's nest- a safe number, not too many but more than enough. This was far from their first clutch and it certainly wouldn't be the last, so when their middle egg failed to hatch, it wasn't any sort of disaster. While the exhausted mother wrangled her youngest two children, the father presided over the last egg, waiting for the clan healer to say what already was known:

"It's dead." He received the news with a weary sigh and thanked the healer. Then, he grabbed the egg and lifted into the sky, heading towards the vast field that the clan used as a graveyard. It was there he left it, out under the open sky, waiting for the gravedigger. That was the last contact the egg and its deceased occupant would ever have with its clan of birth.

Abandoned by world from the moment of creation and thrown away without ceremony, the dead dragonet's spirit could do nothing but cry out in sorrow. What have I done to deserve such a fate? He questioned mournfully. Why do my siblings get to live? It's cold and I'm scared! Where is everyone? Won't anybody answer me?

Nothing alive paid him any heed, but the dead were attentive- his plight had been theirs at one point after all. The long dead warriors and ancient clan elders enshrined within the hallowed ground were unable to communicate with his ghost, but they wanted to help. Many generations of voices were lifted to the heavens, pleading with Windsinger and all that could listen, asking for nothing short of a miracle to occur.

What answered them was not a deity, but it was a child of the sky itself- a vast and powerful air current, rushing far above the abandoned egg in the graveyard. Hundreds of thousands of dragons revered this current and countless clans thrived beneath it. They had named it The Song.
