The Glittering
The Glittering
Heimdall is the son of nine monthers. He was raised by a group of Water Guardians who call themselves The Sisters: whether they are really related by blood to one another, or even to him, he does not know. It hardly seems to matter, when he knows in his bones that they are a family. For many years, the Sisters travelled Sornieth as sought-after oracles. Their presence was requested by clan leaders, new parents, warmongers - all looking for insight into what was to come. Each of them had a different speciality: tarot, runecasting, horoscopy and astrology, augury, reading tea leaves, crystal gazing, dowsing, drawing lots, and the interpretation of dreams. They used their chosen method to receive the Tidelord's prophecies. Heimdall was always told that he hatched on an auspicious day during a sojourn in the Mirrorlight Promenade, while the Sisters were prognosticating for a Light kingdom. His earliest memories are of constant, exciting travel across the breadth of the whole world. The upheaval of the Bounty of the Elements put an end to all of that. When the Tidelord disappeared, the portents fell silent. The Sisters were no longer able to see the future. They returned to the Tsunami Flats, hoping that proximity to the Spiral Keep might aid their prescience, but all they found were other Water clans equally distraught by the silence from their god. Without their prophetic abilities, they were unable to accept any more invitations to read the future, and decided to settle amid the tidal pools. However, when the Sisters ceased their travels, Heimdall realised that, all this time, he had been on his Search without realising it. He was compelled by his instincts to leave his family behind and set out for the unknown. His nine mothers were Guardians, each with a Charge of her own, and understood that he had to leave. Yet the parting was bittersweet: though they wished him well on his search, they could offer him no auguries to guide his path. Instead, each Sister gave him a gift from her own, personal form of divitation, so he would have the tools to use any of their methods should he have the need. They would not reveal the future as they once did, but might provide guidance or, if nothing else, comfort. Heimdall set out alone. He travelled along the coast of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and across the Windswept Plateau until he crossed Starwind Bay and entered the Crystalspine Reaches. There he discovered a pair of tapered rose quartz stumps, and from deep within himself came a distant echo of connection. Some part of his Charge had once been here. Some small piece remained. He collected a few shards of crystal, until the feeling in his bones eased to something closer to content. Yet when he was done he still felt the yearning pull of the Search. He knew, without understanding how, that there was more. He took the pieces first to the Astrolodome, where he made enquiries about the crystal miners who harvest vast gemstone spires from the Reaches. He was told to check the Tourmaline Archives, but there the trail went cold. No crystals matching the shards he had taken had been delivered to the Observatory for research or brought to the Astrolodome to be turned into spell supplies. In fact, there were no corresponding crystals on record at all. Disappointed, Heimdall sent a message to his mothers to ask their advice. He should have expected their reply: to find his path through divination. Growing up, he had learned their various practices. Though his enthusiasm had always outweighed his skill, he remembered his hatchlinghood lessons. He turned to his mothers' craft once again, using the crystal fragments as a lodestone to guide both his questions and the answers he received. Casting the lots gave him a direction, as did the tarot cards after that, and the still pool he scried in next. The signs in the tea leaves and the stars and the flights of birds led him to the Starwood Strand and through its depths, until he finally emerged on the coast and saw, hanging above the ocean, exactly what he had been looking for. His Charge. The Spire. He wasted no time in flying over. It was immediately apparent that it was someone's home, and so he introduced himself to the clan and explained the sitation. He was welcomed and offered a place in the Spire if he wished to stay, and has been a member of the Lundlaevungar ever since. With the hub of the clan as his Charge, it made sense for Thor to appoint Heimdall as the Guardian of the Spire. He is now usually found at the main entrance. As such, he sees the Spire's residents often and is on amicable terms with most. The only exceptions are, unfortuantely, two members of the Althing Council: Loki and Angrboda. When he heard the tale of how the Spire came to be in its current location, and how it initially crashed into the cliffs, he was horrified at the abuse his Charge suffered for Loki's hubris and Angrboda's sentimentality. Their relationship remains strained. Heimdall is known as one of the more serious dragons in the clan, but he offers guests a polite and respectful welcome. He also has a soft spot for hatchlings, and it doesn't take much for the little ones to convince him to do his party trick: conjuring rainbows! He is in regular contact with his mothers, and considers it only a matter of time before they visit to meet their son's Charge. |
