Biography

the first creation

The massive behemoth referred to as Decay is said to be Pestilence's first creation. Spawned in the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth, Decay started "life" as an unrecognizable - but moving - mound of rotting branches, bones, vegetation, stones, and muck, and with time, Pestilence was able to perfect its form into something vaguely Ridgeback-shaped.

Though a mindless golem whose only will is to complete the tasks given by its enchantress, thanks to years of work put into Decay's enchantments, Decay is able to follow surprisingly complex instructions - to a point. While dexterity will never been a strong point for these shambling mounds, they make up for it in strength, able to till a field or dig a hole, or do any hard labour a lazy dragon might not want to do, and they do it all without complaint.

Decay and Rot answer only to Pestilence. While Pestilence has created many subsequent golems to aid the Greenwill Valley, Decay and Rot she retains as her own personal guard, refusing to let them be used by anyone else.
There was a time where I wanted my lair to be nothing but G1 zombies, and Decay was the very first of these. I knew I wasn't interested in resale value for them, so I sought out a mate for Decay and have bred them continuously after they got their genes in October 2014. Much later down the line, I replaced Decay's Current for Clouded, as I liked it better.

Many years ago, this mound of vegetation, branches, bones, stones, and muck took its first shuddering, uneasy step somewhere deep in the Viridian Labyrinth, brought to life by its enchantress, Pestilence. This first step was only the start of the behemoth's journey, however, and after perfecting the form of Decay, the golem would soon be joined by another, Rot, to stand by Pestilence's side.

Together, the trio would travel the Viridian Labyrinth, never staying in one place or another too long. In this time, the towering golems were both Pestilence's protectors, and the source of her troubles. Though she was immensely proud of her creations, other dragonkind did not hold such an esteemed view, perceiving the golems as monsters or abominations against all that is natural. Pestilence was accused of everything from grave-robbing to puppet the skeletons of beloved ancestors, to being shade-touched and deranged, a monster creating more monsters.

For this reason, they never managed to settle in one place for too long before they would be driven out, and they were little more than vagabonds, forever traveling. That is, until they came across the Greenwill Valley. Answering a call for help, Pestilence arrived with the impressive Ridgeback-sized and approximately-shaped golems, and the clan, under siege from their Earthen neighbours, were thankful for any sort of help they could get.

With more reinforcements emerging out of the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth, the newcomers were able to beat back the assailing forces, and Decay and Rot's "wounds" were repairable easily enough with extra muck to be added. However, Pestilence decided she didn't want to see her precious creations be torn apart for some foolish Nature clan invading Dragonhome, and begun creating more. Though she hadn't been here for long, Pestilence knew this place would be worthwhile staying in, for the leader, Aralt, did not particularly care about the how, as long as Pestilence could deliver results, and deliver she could.

At first, the golems Pestilence supplied the clan were not much better than Decay's first iterations, unsteadily-moving mounds of muck hastily put together to serve the day's purpose. They worked well for blockading the assailants and providing cover for the vulnerable dragon defenders. However, with practice, Pestilence's craft improved, and enchantments that took her years to develop for Decay and Rot, were flying from her fingertips into new golems almost as finely-crafted as their progenitors.

Soon, the Ridgeback-shaped golems were the defenders, and unable to feel pain or suffer mortal wounds, they were an unstoppable force to be reckoned with, and all but the largest swarms of enemies would turn tail at the sight of the "Ridgebacks" amassing in response. Everything was going well in Pestilence's eyes, even if the land was battered by the conflict. Every battle won was another testament to her skills. She was basking in the glory, when he showed up.

Only Decay and Rot would know, if they had brains, just how many curses Pestilence muttered under her breath at Luyten's existence. Back in the jungles of the Viridian Labyrinth, they sat through many of her rants, ever-silent listeners, about how this guardian had taken away her perfect set-up, banishing the true leader from her own home, and all but disbanding the clan that once called the craggy cliffsides of Dragonhome their home. And, if they had brains, they might have caught on that Luyten hadn't disbanded the clan... just that a few, notably, a trio involving a Skydancer and her golems, decided to leave. But alas, they did not have brains.

They would eventually return to the clan, with Aralt in her cursed form in tow, to reclaim what they believed was theirs. Without her golems, Pestilence had figured Greenwill Valley was most likely destroyed, succumbing to the surrounding Earthen clans, and crumbling to dust once more. Instead, the two golems and their passengers were swiftly surrounded by warriors bearing the the banner of the Gladekeeper, and Luyten, after hearing what they had to say, gave Pestilence, and the golems, an ultimatum: Stay here, where an eye can be kept on them, or be destroyed.
