Biography
Vial of Darkened Sight ~ May 11, 2020
~ Macabrecabra
Native to the frigid shores of the Southern Icefield, this subspecies of Gaoler thrives by having adapted to a lifestyle both on land and in the water. These variants make their home in the ice floe, where today their clans still support the Icewarden's legacy by capturing and containing the Shade on the isle's coasts.
Leopard Seal Gaolers have developed specialized traits in order to survive in the harsh subzero waters. Like their name suggests, this variant is adept in swimming due to developing fins all over the body for locomotion underwater. These fins combined with the powerful tail muscles of a Gaoler allows for swift, consistent movement while submerged, as well as the dorsal and shoulder crests providing an aerodynamic shape. Unlike their land exclusive cousins, leopard seal Gaolers have thinner fur coats and a higher percentage of body fat to provide insulation when wet. To be faster in the water, this subspecies is less bulky than the normal counterpart, as well as having more lean mass.
Diverging from the pure genes of the standard Gaoler breed did not change the legendary sense of smell they are known for. In fact, the leopard seal Gaoler has an even more dangerous olfactory organ due to it being able to function underwater. Despite still breathing air, this creature possesses a unique vomeronasal organ behind the roof of their mouth that not only can detect faint traces of scent particles in the air like many other creatures, but can also 'taste' the water by filtering it through a chamber in the mouth to assess the scent by parts-per-million (PPM), allowing an aquatic Gaoler to 'smell' underwater. This almost shark-like adaptation is as strong as a normal Gaoler's sense of smell, making them one of the most formidable tracking dragons in all of Sornieth.
It is unknown if their antlers are able to sense vibration, or are simply used to break apart drifting sea ice. There is not enough evidence to support this conclusion yet.
While still mostly inhabiting the southern oceans of the Ice deity, the ability to traverse the water means leopard seal Gaolers are making their way to other parts of the globe, similar to the newly revived Seeker Order. Culturally, there is conflicting opinion of their existence and pedigree. A majority of Gaoler wardens think they are a disgrace to leave the wards on the mainland, and to evolve a trait only seen previously in Banescales is a disgusting display of allegiance to their rival deity. A small handful, however, respect them for evolving traits to further aid the Icewarden in his scourge to seek and imprison Shade.
