Tourmaline
the conflicted guard

Tourmaline’s story begins with her older cousin. He was reckless and stupid, accepting a dare to walk blindly through the Tangled Wood at night. He was bitten by an Onyx Cobra and emerged with the gembond disease. The friends that had dared him to enter never spoke to him again, and most of his family disowned him. Tourmaline’s aunt and her brother, Tourmaline’s father, stood by him, and were pushed out of the Sunbeam Ruins by their neighbours.
The small family unit migrated across Sornieth and were forced to stop in the Reedcliff Ascent for Tourmaline’s mother to lay her egg. Tourmaline hatched on the Windswept Plateau, which broke the Light bloodline in favor of the Windsinger’s domain. Tourmaline’s parents considered this region as good a place as any to hide from anti-gembond dragons, and so she grew up on the Ascent surrounded mostly by Skydancers and Spirals.

Once Tourmaline had finally become an adult, she travelled northeast to the Ruins to see where she might have been hatched in a world where gembond was accepted. Other than the widespread hatred of the disease, Tourmaline found that she had a lot in common with these other Imperials. She stayed with them for months, until a lonely Skydancer crashed near her den.
The other dragons who Tourmaline had begun to call friends looked upon Dayspring with distaste and fear. They were shy, but they were clearly not afraid to showcase their gembond affliction. Tourmaline sheltered them, and when they asked about her kindness, she told them the story of her cousin’s mistake.

Dayspring shared their story too, and the aftermath of their change wasn’t much different from her cousin’s. Neither dragon was happy in the Ruins, so Dayspring invited her back to their small clan back on the Windswept Plateau. Tourmaline was a bit hesitant to leave the place she could have called home, but eventually she realized that she was lying to the Light dragons every day when they showed their hatred of

gembond. She joined their new clan, offering to be its first guard. Dayspring became her mate, and the pair had many children.
