Biography
⚔ B R A C K E N ⚔
Wanderer | Scholar | Philanthropist
He was rudely jolted into wakefulness by a sharp shove against his shoulder. He groaned in protest, trying to curl protectively into himself on the thin woven mat of moldy reeds that served as his resting place. It felt as though a horde of angry wasps surged through his limbs as Bracken struggled to get upright. "Come on," a voice whispered harshly at his side, "we have to go now." Soft spoken and gentle, Bracken does honor to the patron goddess of his birth by slipping through life like an unassuming shadow. Fond of lending assistance to his fellow dragon, he'll often do so with no fanfare, in ways that cannot be traced back to him at all. Most days find him contemplating the world as he travels it. The philosophy that reigns in his heart is "leave things a little better than the state in which you found them" and he lives by it heartily. If one befriends Bracken, they will discover a wellspring of devotion and loyalty that seems inexhaustible. It is most clearly on display in the form of his bond with Insko, the longneck medium he befriended while traveling through some rather unsavory ruins. Bracken has protected and aided Insko, patiently humoring the longneck's belief that Bracken is a spirit that Insko is channeling and not an earthly creature at all. Bracken also owes a deep debt of gratitude to the wildclaw Cypress, a debt he feels he will never be able to adequately repay, and so continues to pay forward with everyone else he meets. As he has never possessed much, he places very little value on acquiring material wealth or possessions. But gifts given are gifts treasured. |

HISTORY In the clan of Tva'Kadith, those who do not submit to the will of the Plague Mother meet with the harshest of consequences. They are sent marching into Her service by the devout that sit beneath the shrines. Lurking outside the clan's borders exists a small but exceedingly fierce rebellion to the clan's activities. These few dragons might easily have slunk off unnoticed and resumed safe and comfortable lives in their own lands but have instead chosen instead to intervene and save the fates of those that cross into unfriendly territory. One of these dragons, a young wildclaw spiritwalker, is sometimes capable of transporting other dragons well outside the clan's boundaries, at great cost to her energy. Constantly hovering the line between asleep and awake, she is able to astrally project herself and walk the clan's boundaries while her body remains captive and prone. It was on one such astral foray that she discovered Bracken, his plaintive warbling cries turning her head. When she stumbled upon him, he was still flopping wetly about, disgruntled at having hatched not in a comfortable nest but in the semi-fresh body cavity of some unidentified herdbeast. As her body was insubstantial, she was unable to scoop up the hatchling and spirit him away. His cries had also attracted the attention of the protector of the shrines. The infant Bracken took one look at the eyes glowing beneath the matted, shaggy mantle and began to shriek. The guardian scooped up the squalling hatchling and trundled back into the heart of the shrines. That done, he went off to find either the leader or the shaman to see what might be done about the little newborn. The little nocturne was inconsolable until the faintly glowing form of the wildclaw appeared before him. She soothed him and, with the aid of one of her frog companions, led him to a hidden crevice within the Pit that he wriggled into. With the use of powerful magic she'd learned since her own captivity, Cypress was able to send the little hatchling into a suspended hibernal sleep, vowing that when her reserves of power had refilled, she would truly save him. That day came three seasons later. Bracken woke from his hibernation knowing very little about the world and what it held. Mere moments after he'd gained his feet again he was blinded by a furious rush of white light. When his head cleared again he was standing on a moonlit grassy expanse, looking into the eyes of a dragon whose familiarity was annoyingly elusive. She patiently explained all she could, that she had hidden him away and kept him as safe as she knew how, that Tva'Kadith was a dangerous place and he must flee. She told him also that she would guide him as much as she could and that there were others who could and would help him on his journey, but that he must walk much of his path alone. So began Bracken's wanderings, taking him far and wide over Sornieth as he struggled to make sense of everything. As he had never properly learned to fly, there were many areas of the land that he eschewed. Often he would muster up the courage to climb a tall tree or perch at the edge of a cliff and contemplate a jump, but never managed much more than a glide. To this day, he is a bit fearful of actual flying. One fateful meander took him through a grave site in the Tangled Wood. He came upon a young longneck crouched over a candle, humming and mumbling as he hopped awkwardly about the tiny flame. Bracken saw that one more hop would land the creature square into an open grave, and hurriedly leaped forward to drag the longneck to safety. Awed at his own power in conjuring a protective spirit, the longneck invited Bracken's company and the two became inseparable companions. Every now and again he will receive a visit from an incorporeal Cypress, who always manages somehow to find him. Perhaps one day he will make his way back to the land of his birth and face down the terrors that dwell there. For now, he is content to roam the land, see what there is to see, and learn what there is to learn. |

In the picture the dragons head covering slipped and fell over its face and eyes, hence the small smile.
