"Life is short,
And pleasures few,
And holed the ship,
And drowned the crew,
But o! But o!
How very blue
The sea is!"

The Island

A long time ago, there was a small clan of dragons. They lived on an island with a dormant volcano in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and many generations of the clan lived peacefully on it, because it could not be found on any maps. This is how this clan liked to live, and though they might observe other dragons from beneath waves, hidden by the schools of fish and coral reefs, or beneath the hulls of large ships, they never did interact with them. Then, after years of solitude, what once were peaceful waters began to storm heavily, and tsunamis threatened the safety of the island's inhabitants. And then came the wrecks. Ships who tried to travel in the now turbulent and merciless waters would get caught in the storms, and seeing land where they could possibly shelter, they'd head towards them. They'd be too distracted by the storm to notice how shallow the waters were, and could crash their ships into the sand banks and coral reefs, and what remained of the vessels would wash up the next day.

And so the clan was discovered. The captains and crews of the ships were confused with the fact that this island wasn't documented on any maps, but nonetheless existed here. The clan was was curious about the newcomers, and after much deliberation on what should be done with the outsiders, the clan decided to shelter and take care of them. The clan offered their skills and resources to the crews to build a vessel for these dragons, and the dragons of the clan, who had been raised on this island, and had swam in these waters since youth, knew which currents would safely get these dragons back to land. Some of the clan's dragons would accompany and guide the vessel, delivering the crews and what cargo could be salvaged, and in turn they made contact with other dragons. This kept happening, and more and more, and the clan grew tired of having shipwrecks damage their reefs, and having to use their resources to build vessels, so the dragons of the clan came together and built a lighthouse on the north most point of the island.

The lighthouse was tall, and had a brilliant light at it's top, which was powered by the thermal energy from the dormant volcano, and with it's construction came the solution of guiding ships around the island. However, the storms still continued, and tsunamis threatened the waters and the ships that traveled them, and shipwrecks would still wash up on the shores of the island. The clan's researchers tried to think of a solution, and with much trial and error, the clan constructed a powerful machine. Deep in the water, surrounding their island, they built many of these machines, and with the thermal power of the volcanic vents underwater, they powered them. These unique contraptions produced powerful waves of sound, so powerful in fact that when they activated upon the detection of a tsunami with the help of magic, they'd disperse the waves into smaller ones, and calm the stormy water so that only the rain would threaten ships.

After these machines were placed, and with the lighthouse's guiding light, the shipwrecks ceased, and the reef healed. Now that the waters here were safer, it turned out that this part of the sea made a fantastic trade route, and many ships began to travel using it. The island was added to the maps of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and the island became a hub of trade, being conveniently located directly on the trade route. The clan on the island grew in size, as some of the visitors became residents, and a port, market and inn were made to further welcome dragons to the island. With that, generation after generation have tended to the lighthouse and generation after generation, the keepers of the lighthouse and wave machines kept growing and growing, and the story of the history of the island and it's inhabitants is told to hatchlings of the clan.
