Zeria's family has been cursed as long as anyone can remember. Every generation, the eldest member of the family would be confined to a magical lighthouse on the coast of the Ochre Sea, tasked with keeping it lit until they passed. Unfortunately for her, Zeria was an only child, so her fate was sealed, as much as she disliked it. On the day Zeria's father passed, she, in one final act of rebellion, was nowhere to be found. She didn't care if the lighthouse went dark, she didn't care what happened to the curse, as long as she wasn't trapped for the rest of her life. That night, she went to sleep miles away from home, content in her newfound freedom. She woke up the next morning in the lighthouse, laying beneath its great, glowing lantern. Even worse was that, as she discovered as the day went on, the lantern's fuel levels were now somehow magically tied to her own energy; if she wanted to survive the night, she would have to maintain the lighthouse. She did so begrudgingly. The lantern found itself well cared for, but the rest of the lighthouse was not so lucky. Anything that was not nailed down found itself smashed, tossed, or otherwise the victim of Zeria's fury. When her immediate rage was sated (or when there were no more things to break), she settled down to simmer and stew at her new situation, before eventually falling into a fitful sleep. The next aspect of her curse was discovered the next morning, when Zeria awoke to a strange dragon tidying up her mess. She tried to call out to them, frantic for any sort of contact, begging for them to just stay and talk and help her escape. However, the figure merely put aside their broom and bowed, before turning into a flock of songbirds and exiting out the open window. When she tried to follow them out, the dragon returned, only to gently shoo her back into her room (how ironic that the birds are putting her in the cage). Attempting to exit out the door like normal yielded the same results. As one last ditch attempt to get them to return, she smashed another plate, before returning to her everyday routine. When she awoke the next morning, sure enough, the dragon was there cleaning the mess of ceramic. This time, she was quieter when she asked them to stay. It seemed to work, as they remained long enough to exchange careful pleasantries before bowing and leaving again. Days turned into months into years, and this routine stayed; smash a plate before bed, convince her guard to stay in the morning, have a conversation, and work on the lighthouse when they left. She learned that they didn't have a name (she dubbed them Wallflower), they were just as much stuck here as she, and that they had never been anywhere but the lighthouse. With this information, Zeria was struck with a new mission. She poured herself into research, reading the magically changing books for any evidence of something that could maintain the lighthouse without her. When one was found, a magical generator, she pleaded with Wallflower to go find one. She promised that she would stay put until they came back (she would never leave her new friend behind). Eventually, they conceded and left, admittedly caught up in the excitement of finding a path to freedom. That final week was the most nerve-wracking week of Zeria's life, even more stressful than her first week in the lighthouse. At least then she knew what was going on outside, but now she was stuck wondering, worrying, and pacing a hole in the floor. Just when she thought she would lose her mind waiting, Wallflower's soft, telltale knock came from the door. Just like that, the whirlwind was back, carrying them to the lantern (plug in the generator), through her room (pack up any meager belongings she wanted to keep), into the kitchen (gather enough food to get them somewhere better), and finally out the door.
---
Obviously, Zeria's not dead, so the generator seems to be working well enough. Now, she's finally free to explore the world as she sees fit. However, now she's faced with an even tougher issue: how do you act like a normal dragon when your entire life up to this point has been preparing to not be a normal dragon? |
