Biography
Coming from Adavar, Beatrix knows well the cost of love, and so it is simpler to never give it and never have to pay the price.
There were glimmers of a small hope when she joined Dramatica, the keeper Penna leaving most choices to Dervon and their drakes themselves, but that all changed with their disappearance.
Keeper Mao travelled from her birthclan to oversee and Dramatica became much like the Adavar Beatrix once knew. The clan which was not used to the steady, cold hand of another keeper, fell into chaos and the keeper seemed not to realise how distinctly different these two clans were — you couldn't treat one like the other.
Famine struck fast, drakes who had known Keeper Mao as a peculiar yet kind visitor did not see those same traits when she became more than a visitor and they did not care to listen. Beatrix knew the keeper was trying though when food was brought in from Adavar's own stores, and Beatrix did her part: her first nest would be with a drake she did not know, and her children's fate was sealed.
They would go to auction, snatched up by the highest bidder and all Beatrix could do was hope that the bids were high and that they would be truly wanted, but her belief was thin. She could not afford the price of love: to have her heart shattered when her hatchlings were pulled squirming from their nest, and so she did not give it.
It was all she could do to tell them, "It will be okay."
and she would never know how one, in particular, would cling to that.
