JOURNAL

Maize’s wings bristled in the frigid wind as he flew, the bitter chill stabbing the tender, golden membranes between his muscles. He was far from the hoarfrost-encrusted spires that served as a home of sorts, a main base to his beloved clan. He felt odd about leaving--perhaps because it had been so long--before earnestly admonishing himself to think better of the experience. It would be good to spread his wings every once in a while, something he hadn't had much time to do while taking care of business.

Still, it felt wrong to realize that his desk would remain empty, even though he had work to complete—reports and the like didn’t cease merely because he had decided to fly off. Maize knew that better than anyone by now.

He just wasn’t sure that he could ask any other dragon, even those of his court, to aid him where he was headed.

The male cared about the wellbeing of his clan, and he found that he simply couldn’t agree with the task of sitting high and mighty, asking others to do his work for him. His title, Clanmaster, was not synonymous with having a high horse, after all. It was daily that he was forced to remind himself that he had been chosen by his people, that they longed for leadership and found it in him.

Maize knew why he was chosen. The Nocturne’s deep obsidian scales were unmarred, polished, and immaculate despite the many fights he had decided to partake in and his sheer lack of effort. He was the biggest dragon in all of his clan. Not to mention his unwavering loyalty and sense of duty to all that depended on him, no matter who they were.

That same sense of duty was exactly what carried him to the edge of his territory in the deep black of the night. He had a feeling, one that twisted in his gut every night as he slept for days on end. When he finally told Obsidian, the clan’s resident Spymaster, she had treated him like he was out of his mind.

“You mean to tell me,” she had hissed, emerald eyes flaring in shock. Perhaps anger as well—Maize couldn’t be sure. “that you want to fly out into territory that is, you know, not OURS, where you could be put into massive amounts of danger...All based on a FEELING?”

Maize had only nodded solemnly at the time and dismissed the subject with a simple, “Don’t let your Clanmastress know that I’m gone—It won’t take long.”

Her jaws parted as if to speak, but shut them a moment later. She hadn’t the rank nor the heart to suggest another idea.

The thought of Obsidian's worried green gaze dissipated as Maize slowed, beating his wings to remain in a stable hover. His heart seemed to still, frozen in time by...something.
Something was wrong.
He was being watched.

Far off screams penetrated Maize's ears, causing him to turn his head in surprise. Fire, fire in the distance. The clan was in danger. Turning tail, Maize started to fly back towards the camp, only for something to hit his side with a dull thud. He fell to the ground, vision slowly fading The last thing he saw was a huge Imperial, bending down to pick him up in worn talons and carrying him up into the sky.
