""A mistake repeated more than once is a decision.""

━━━━━━━━━━━━ b i o ━━━━━━━━━━━━

Koa is a burly guardian who's been through a lot. A mistake pairing, an unwanted child, the only survivor of her clutch. She was due for the Glademother's embrace and yet she stayed. She was born with the ability to shrug off magic, rendering her a useful pawn for her 'mother's' spells.

This resulted in a lot of resentment to her mother, rightly owed. The things her mother asked her to do were terrible, and when Koa finally broke away from her mother's embrace, she had to try and make ends meet on her own. Her father was barred from her, kept seperate by her mother's own spell, and the world knew of her history, alloowing them to judge before they knew her.

But Lira listened.

Koa sat on a woven blanket, chewing her nails and glaring at the passers-by. Very few returned her look, with most choosing to hurry along. It was unnatural to see a dragon so pale, what with coatls being a popular breed among the tourists and travellers. Koa glanced at the skin around her nails. Sure, there were pale dragons. That new, pink dragon that had recently arrived had even fairer wings then her, but Koa was truly stark. The skin of an unwanted child, the blood of an unfaithful lover. She knew she had sinned before she was even born, her mother had told her so her entire life. Her father didn’t know she existed; her mother preferred it that way.

A dragon roared nearby, causing her to wince and cover her head. Her peddled wares, cheap thinks and trinkets, really, sat in front of her. No one would buy them. She didn’t even try to sell them. Locks of her hair, bones from old graves, broken toys and junk, anything to gain her a seat at Scunner’s pub that night.

A shadow passed over her wares, and a sweet scent of roses followed. A pale hand reached for a jet-black lock.

“Your hair, dear?”
Koa looked up, narrowed her eyes and snatched the hair away. Her gut flipped, and she didn't like that. “Not for sale”, she cried as she started packing up her things. The skydancer stepped back in shock as Koa began to roll up the rug.
“Koa, is it? I’d like to talk.”

Koa spun around and growled, “I do not talk to the likes of you. I’ve heard of your dangerous Arcane magic, Lira.”

Lira perked up upon hearing her name. Koa turned away, but Lira was again in front of her.
“Wait, Koa, please!”

Koa turned again, pushing away the skydancer’s outstretched arms, and storming through the crowds. She thought she was clear but the skydancer followed, calling after her. An old alley lead to a tavern where she sat, a passageway used by the hatchlings ended above her house. She was everywhere, anticipating Koa’s actions. She’d had enough. Turning around with claws out, she advanced towards the skydancer. “Leave me alone!” she cried.

The skydancer smiled, unaware of the danger. “You have your father’s pride”, she cooed.
Koa only grew in anger. “You don’t know my father!” Danger, her senses warned, but she kept advancing. A flash of iridescent red hide, a half-second warning before she was pinned to the ground by a much larger, much older, battle-scarred guardian. He didn’t even look at her as his massive hand pinned her back to the ground, but she recognised her father.

“Loren”, Lira cried, clapping her hands at the spectacle. “So lovely of you to join us!”

Loren didn’t answer, as he normally did. He barely acknowledged Lira with a nod, his pressure on Koa’s back getting heavier. Koa grunted and struggled, gaining Lira’s attention.
“Loren, dear, lighten up a little. You’re crushing her.”

Loren finally looked down, his eyes catching Koa’s for a second before glazing over and looking away. Lira saw the exchange and sighed. “She has really caught you, dear friend, hasn’t she?” This caused Koa to look up at the skydancer.
“I’m sorry?”

“Koa, if I call Loren off, will you stay put? You’ve been pushed away from a lot of information concerning you, but I need you to listen now. Your father doesn’t see you-“
“Yeah, I know. He’s never seen me once.”

“No, I mean… he can’t see you. He knows of you, but he can’t see you. Your father has been captured by a blood witch, who is using his power for herself. I don’t know how you are still alive, how she hasn’t killed you yet, but your father was able to escape one night and get to safety, before she captured him again. He’s her prisoner. Loren, off!”

Slowly, the pressure eased off Koa and she took a heady gasp of air. Her head spun, but she wouldn’t dare let the skydancer know that. Drawing in a deep breath, Koa asked “This blood witch wouldn’t be my mother, would she?”

Lira grew silent. “…Which one?”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Why was she still here? Somehow Lira had started speaking all this nonsense, and Koa had decided to stay and listen. Now, a few days later, she was sitting on the edge of Lira’s bed, watching as her little spirit guardian wove feathers into her hair. The shiny glass on the other side of the wall swayed with the breeze, and occasionally Koa caught glimpses of Lira in the other room, talking to a dark blue skydancer. A faint hint of jealousy perked, and Koa glared at the little guardian. Bold of it to share its emotions so freely with other dragons. The little guardian looked up at her, the picture of innocence, causing Koa to frown and look away. Tilting her head meant the little guardian complained, but it was the easiest way to catch what Lira was saying.

“She’s not ready yet,” Lira was saying. “She only told me last night...”

Aah. Last night, to impress Lira with her history, Koa told her everything about her false mother. Her actual mother was still unknown, but it was obvious to all that Cirsei never was her blood. Koa had known, had been told her entire life she was not of Cirsei’s line, even her motyher's treatment of her rang true to everyone’s rumours. But Cirsei had taken her in when no one else could. And despite the poor treatment she received, she could not remember Cirsei ever taking her blood.

“Lira,” the male skydancer asked. “Are you saying she never drew from Koa?”

“I’m thinking there’s a reason, maybe she is immune from her powers. We still don’t know who her mother is, Maybe Loren knew and instead of warning people-”

“Took action?” The male was talking again. “So you agree, Koa is a weapon?”

“I don’t want to put her in that kind of danger. She’s not been trained.”

“Lira, we’ll have to try. Once Loren dies, who’s next?”

“Jake.” Lira sighed, placing her hand on his chest. A pang of hurt went through Koa’s heart again, in the same place Lira touched Jake. The little guardian copied Koa’s expression, shaking its head. Not I, it whispered. Koa snapped her teeth at the guardian, causing it to drop Koa’s hair and float away. Jealousy was replaced by guilt as she watched the braid slowly unravel. Koa hated this.

Standing up, she stormed outside, watching Lira quickly take her hand off Jake. Jake, for his part, looked very uncomfortable.

“You want me to fight her?”

Lira shook her head as Jake nodded. Lira started to protest but Jake cut her off. “She’s kept you close for a reason, and it wasn’t to protect you. She might have tried to use you to further her plans, but Loren’s gotten in the way at some point. Hence the measures to prevent him from ever seeing you. Ever since you’ve stayed here with Lira though, Cirsei’s been knocking down these doors trying to get to you. She knows, and you need to stop her.”

“That’s lame, Jake.”

Jake looked suitably offended. “I’ve never been one for speeches.”

“So I kill her?”

Lira was shocked. “Arcanist, no! We are not the Swamp, we do not need to kill! Only incapacitate. We only need to stop her, not end her.”

“Lira, she’s a parasite! If you get me to go against her I will kill her!” Lira turned away from Koa and looked pleadingly at Jake. “See?” she implored, but Jake was stern.

“Modremoth has spoken. You act today.”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The plan was stupid.

Fight Cirsei, hoping that her magic wouldn’t kill Koa? Beat her to a pulp? Smash her jars of bloods and poisons? Make it look like a freak accident? Lira chewed her lip.
There were people in the Swamp, trained to do this exact task. A bit of extra money, and no one would be the wiser.
Koa was in the other room, washing her face. Her little guardian was in there with her, holding her hair. Her big guardian and her little guardian, she thought, and shocked herself at the flush on her cheeks. Such thoughts were improper for a lady like her, and yet she still leaned on the door and stared at Koa’s back. The blood red thylacine mark, indicative of Loren’s blood, ran down her back like war paint. Without thinking, she took a few steps and rested her hand on one of the larger stripes. Distractedly, Koa reached an arm back, and pushed against her wrist, causing the skydancer to drop her hand. Both paused, Koa tense, Lira thrumming with the energy she had felt within Koa. Koa had felt the zap too.

Koa broke the tension first. “Was that… the Charge?”

“I don’t know.”

Silently, Koa held out her hand again. Lira placed her hand in the guardians. The little guardian left the room.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

“What do you mean she’s gone?!”

Koa burst through the doors of Loren’s lair. The place was spotless, save for a limp Loren, head cradled in the healer’s lap. A groan from the red guardian distracted her for a second, but her attention was back on Jake.

“She must have caught wind and travelled off last night. I can’t find hide not hair of her.

“Then get the trackers and find her!”

“Koa, Koa!” Lira rushed in. “Koa, she’s gone, that’s what we wanted. We need to focus on your father.”

Koa’s fists balled up in silent fury. Getting down on one knee, she grabbed Loren’s chin and angled it towards her face, watching his eyes roll back. “Tell me when he wakes. I’m going out for a bit.”

She stood up and stormed out, but not before turning around at the entrance. Looking for Lira, she caught her eyes.

“I’ll be back later.”
