Mercer had started out as a fragment on Loyd's side of the caverns, representing a master of deception with the various masks he wears. As he changed his masks, he would change himself in the eyes of others, creating a new identity to go by and leaving his past ones behind. His reasons for this are varied; sometimes it was out of protection, other times it was to gain more attention, or maybe he just felt like it that day. But whichever way he went, these masks would ultimately have consequences, leading him to deceit and lies he then wouldn't be able to get out of. After a while, the masks he wore would deteriorate his true self, and he began to forget what he was truly like in favor of what he pretended to be.
His trickery began to eat away at him and with time, he became less prideful of his abilities and more hateful towards himself because of it. This is when Chloe approached and managed to invite him to her side of the cavern, allowing him to be shown a different way to use his masks, as well as showing the tundra how he can love himself for what he is, not what he tries to be.

Now, Mercer has shifted permanently to Chloe's side, wanting to stay away from the darkness of his creator, the one who designed him to be what he now hates. Instead of using his masks for deception, he uses them for comedy and often performs plays to the remnants for entertainment. But most of all, he remains himself - though, due to his past in shifting identities, it can be hard for him to determine exactly who he is...

But here is what the remnants know: Mercer is a gentle soul who seeks out smiles in everyone, and after putting his past actions behind him, it is clear how much the tundra had improved. In addition, he is an incredibly good actor as well as a creative mind, being able to come up with and perform characters on the spot. Even if he may occasionally lose himself to his masks, he will always have his friends to keep him grounded and remind him how great his true self really is.
