"Don't Be Evil....."
  • “My life’s work,” you sometimes hear the artisans sigh, their eyes lovingly fixed on the wares they’ve crafted. Breathtaking wonders of finely spun metal, glittering with magic and gems. Each price tag, no matter how inflated, seems a tawdry number for each “life’s work”. But guard them with your life you do—because the prices, no matter how tawdry, are high.
You learn to see the signs of those not willing to pay the price. Furtive glances, twitching claws, the many surreptitious mannerisms that loudly signal “Thief!” You always make them wish they paid the price on the tag, when you catch them. No matter how inflated the price, yours is always higher.
  • No good deed goes unpunished. You have many other talents besides clerking and selling, and your employers eagerly make use of those. You leave your paperwork behind to stand at the door of the shop, a dazzling cautionary sign against larceny. Why bother with signboards or automated lookouts? You’re the only sign the shop needs, the one with enough viciousness and strength to realize any threat of retribution.
The best part about a sign like you is that you don’t need to be read. A single glance, the faintest gleam of your claws—that’s all the warning thieves need.
  • Your work keeps you confined next to the doorway. You hardly ever move from beside it, yet your reputation flits ahead of you, an untethered, unwelcome shadow. It brings back whispers
    “He’s a monster...”
    “A brute, a thug...”
“He does it solely for fun...”
You never see the faces behind the rumors. You never learn their names. “You shouldn’t care,” you tell yourself, “what strangers think, how they want you to do your job...”
But you do, and each fearful look they give you makes you long for the days of money and paperwork. You would head back there if you could—but the job’s demands are stronger. They keep you shackled by the door, your claws and power on display, striking fear into the hearts of the honest and the unworthy alike.
  • You can’t identify what made you stop one day, what made you say, “I quit.” Was it yet another terror-stricken glance, a misplaced plea for mercy, another rumor declaring what a vile beast you were?
Perhaps it was all of them together, pushing you to the boiling point; perhaps the exact instant doesn’t matter. The doorway remains open, but no longer will you darken it. Rumors of your brutality overtook you before, and now you walk away, hoping to leave them all behind.
  • No good deed goes unpunished. Perhaps that’s why the flames left you unscathed, and why you found your way to the outpost. Your talents for clerking and selling are once again scorned, and you are posted by the door. A cautionary sign. A warning. A threat.
In earlier days, the irony would have embittered you, but now you embrace your circumstances with goodwill. You may have nowhere else to go—but you have worthy opponents, should you choose to head outside. Gone are the days when you defended overpriced tchotchkes; today, you guard actual lives. And they regard you not with fear now—but with relief, with hope, with pride.
