Morana

Antique Shop Owner

manipulative, alluring, lonesome

h

So I do what you want
Singing soft grunge just to soak up the noise
Blue ribbons on ice
Playing their guitars, only one of my toys
'Cause I like you a lot
No holds barred, I've been sent to destroy, yeah

and when the moon was high, from the ocean came a breeze of dread and cold

Moranna was part of a mass-hatch, meaning that from birth she could tell there was nothing too special around her. She had a very common childhood up to the point where she was informed she would have to join the Exalted March. When she refused, she was told to leave her home clan and make a name for herself on her own.

For decades, Moranna was a clan of a single dragon. She had to scavenge her own food, build her own home. The harsh youthful years made her greedy and self-centred. By the time she joined a more amicable clan as a prized gathered, Moranna was an entirely different dragonet. Now she wanted to hone her magic skills and gatheting knowledge, channel her element and start to make a name for herself. She was already a mimic expert and a witch in training when she scavenged Maeve's egg.

Her master, who taught her how to identify and exorcise mimics, told her to take a few years off and raise little Maeve peacefully. She would have time to learn more exorcism when Maeve was a little older. Alas, Moranna noticed her daughters inclination for the divine arts and decided to make money off her. She had a massive argument with her former master, as they could not see ways, and so they parted. It broke Moranna's heart.

For years they were always on the run, always on the road. Jumping from one clan to the other, only staying long enough for Maeve's weather scrying skills to make them money alongside Moranna's own mimic catching skills.

Failing to notice her daughter's uneasiness, she agreed to settle in Porto for Maeve to get proper seer training. She lays low and calm, recollecting all the antiques and artefacts she collected during her years as an exorcist and patiently waiting for her daughter's education to end.

oK9Gg0U.gif In the meanwhile, she's known as the dragon that makes cold wind come from the sea, a habit she's growing while staying in town. Moranna loves the sea, it's a newfound pleasure for her. She'll fly over the waves and pierce through clouds every evening, making gusts of cold breeze cool the temperatures in town in preparation for the night. Reclusive, elusive and beautiful, Moranna is known around town for her mysterious nature.

She can be often seen buying goods and produce around town. Being a dragon of habit, she always buys the same things with the same dragons each and every day. At night, she'll walk around the Bay in silence.

Hatchlings tell tales of her as Dreadbreeze Witch, and she finds that title amusing. Deep inside, she likes hatchlings and is a good mother to Maeve, caring for her, spending as much time as she can with her daughter and investing in her abilities. Unfortunately, years on her own made her harsh and ambitious.

But Porto has a way of changing dragon's natures, and perhaps slowly Moranna will see they can make a name and life for them in town. Maybe this time, she will grow some roots and have a proper home. Who knows? Maybe this time she'll enjoy being part of a clan.

Mimics

by me, what is english even

xxxxxxxIt was already dark, despite not even being three in the afternoon. The longest night of the year was here. It had been a few seasons since Morana had been at an actual clan during the Night of the Nocturne. She had forgotten the commotion completely.

xxxxxxxPorto was not ready for it. Not at all.

xxxxxxxShe took her daily flight through the sea and the beach and saw a massive commotion at Navigator Harbor. With a sigh, she approached.

xxxxxxx"This is not your problem." – She said to herself as she reached the Ballroom.

xxxxxxx"This is not my problem." – She repeated as she made a way through the small crowd of Navigators.

xxxxxxx"This is not–"

xxxxxxxKatarina was crying copiously, a massive clawing at her left side, and blood pooling on the floor as her grandmother hastily bandaged her, and her aunts tried to soothe her while the Navigator healer did not arrive.

xxxxxxx– What happened here? – Morana asked with her imposing and low voice.

xxxxxxxThe Navigators looked at her. Never before had they paid her any mind.

xxxxxxx– What do you think?! An accident! Nothing else! - Nephilim said in an angry voice.
xxxxxxx– A well-timed one. - Morana replied with sarcasm.
xxxxxxx– I'm sorry, this is a private family affair. - The elder of the Navigator princesses said. She was a nocturne, like Morana, so obviously, her mimicry made her mimic the girl's politeness and back off a little.
xxxxxxx– Kat... Kat, dear. Who did this? – The hatchling caretaker said, clearly distraught she had not been there to protect the girl.

xxxxxxxThe little girl did not respond, although she was stopping to cry. She coughed from being choked on her tears and wiped her face with the back of her hand.

xxxxxxxMorana could not stand to see wee ones crying. It pained her too much. She was a mother now, despite denying motherhood in the past. The thought of how unprepared this city was sent a shiver down her spine. Maeve was safe, for she was a seasoned specialist on mimics. But what about the other children?

xxxxxxx"This is not my problem, but..."

xxxxxxxWhat did this, child?

xxxxxxxThe girls' bright golden eyes shifted towards Morana. She seemed to ponder for a minute. With a very shy and quiet mumble, she replied.

xxxxxxx– Chair.
xxxxxxx– I destroyed it when I arrived at the scene, in time to save Kat's life. - The younger of the princesses said and looked at her mother with a sombre look on her face. Morana liked her automatically.
xxxxxxx– Did you find the other? - Morana asked reaching out for two bottles of whisky in a cabinet and emptying them on the floor. She would need them.
xxxxxxx– There is no other! - Nephilim said standing up and cleaning her hands from Kat's blood. - We have never had mimic problems in Porto before and I see no reason we should have them now!
xxxxxxx– Did you find the other? - She insisted.
xxxxxxx– There! Is! No! oth-
xxxxxxx– Neph. - Guildmaster Farris said and his mate looked at him. - This is no time for pride.

xxxxxxxThere was a silence between the two. A family man and a proud business dragonet.

xxxxxxx"They make a balanced couple." – Morana thought.

xxxxxxx– Did you find the other? - Morana directed her question to the younger princess. The imperial looked at her from head to toe.
xxxxxxx– Nay.

xxxxxxxMorana gazed around the Ballroom hall. Statues, chandeliers, relics of the princesses travels and spoils. A banquet for mimics.

xxxxxxx– Mimics are never alone. - Morana whispered, pacing around the room. - The least you'll find are two. - She said a little louder. - But three is standard. - She concluded to herself, while slowly going up the staircase.

xxxxxxxWhen she reached the overlooking balcony and gazed down at the group down below, she felt a shiver down her spine and instinctively looked to her right.

xxxxxxx"Mimics are never alone."

xxxxxxx– I'll go with you. - The younger princess followed Morana to the top of the stairs.
xxxxxxx– Elena! - The caretaker said, placing a caring hand on her shoulder. - Allow me to lead. - She said, and nobody questioned how dangerous Brie could be right now. She was an entirely different dragon when hatchlings were on the line.

xxxxxxxMorana looked at her unexpected party. She was used to working alone, and being alone, save for Maeve. This small party reminded her of younger years and her master. Morana gave out a soothing huff as her whole body trembled with determination, and, strangely, with excitement.

xxxxxxx– Didn't you have a hall of statues in this Ballroom?
xxxxxxx– Aye. Down the right-wing, at the very end. - And with a beat, Elena added. - Wouldn't be the first time it's haunted.
xxxxxxx– So I've heard. - Morana said, looking at her.
xxxxxxx– Why are we suddenly having mimics? - She asked. - Mother is right. They were never a problem before. We never had them. Had to travel out into beastclan territory to find a wee few.
xxxxxxx– It is in a mimic's nature to seek company. They long for dragonkind, unlike beastclan. - She stopped before the hall of statues door. - As your clan grows, so does the attention it draws to itself. And a ballroom is the perfect location. - She said, adding with a whisper. - No better place to find company.

xxxxxxxThe guardian and the imperial positioned themselves. The caretaker - no - the former captain of the town guard opened the door.

xxxxxxxThere was an eerie air on the room. The statues gazed at them with piercing eyes.

xxxxxxxMorana's two bodyguards paced around the room carefully, keeping a steady watch over their shoulders. But a nocturne's talent is different. Morana gazed at a statue, a real one, hard and meditated for a second. It was in her nature to mimic, even something still. She breathed in and out a few times, until she was still, so still, that for a small second, there was not even a heartbeat.

xxxxxxxWhen you stop, the world around moves much faster.

xxxxxxxShe took one of her silk sashes and quickly crossed the room, wrapping one of the many statues. It roared in danger of being discovered. How did she dare?! It wanted her company but she was attacking it with violence! How could she attack it?!

xxxxxxxIt tore through her sash with its lance and spun its weapon round, cutting Morana on her chest and drawing blood. She yelled in pain and fell to the floor as the statue left it's standing to raise its spear above its head and draw closer to her. Morana eyes grew wide as she tried stumbling backwards at the same time the statue drew in.

xxxxxxxElena rushed to Morana's side at the same time Brie toppled the statue with her massive body, pinning it down on the floor with her claws. In doing so, some of the surrounding statues crashed, startling the other mimic. How dared she disturb its act?! If it performed the act of a statue well, dragonkind would accept it!

xxxxxxxThe town guard screamed when the startled mimic's spear pierced through her hind tight. She tackled the statue with her whole body, crushing it to pieces and killing the third mimic in doing so.

xxxxxxxBut the second one lunged at her face, aiming at her eyes with its claws.

xxxxxxx– Brie! - Elena screamed, fighting to pull the statue from the guard's body, who had trouble finding ground with her hurt leg.

xxxxxxxThe imperial tore through the statue and pulled at it so hard its marble arms broke. The mimic screamed in pain, a sound that begged for the dragon's forgiveness. It just wanted to be with them! Please! Please! How could they not see it?!

xxxxxxxO, creature of the deep. - Morana stood up, reciting her incantation. - Who has resurfaced to the shallow.

xxxxxxxThe mimic screamed in agony. Elena had trouble holding it still or even pinning it down. She dropped it and the fall crashed one of its wings off.

xxxxxxxMy wind urges me to light. - She pulled the glass orb she found before and raised it between herself and the remains of the mimic. - My voice curses you to shadow! - She ordered.

xxxxxxxThe mimic started glowing in veins of bright green light. It screamed an unearthly sound as it was exorcised out of the statue it was possessing.

xxxxxxxThe hall was filled with green light until all of a sudden it went out. With the very beams of light turning into a cloud of strange-looking dust. The orb now glowed in hues of green, emitting light as it appeared to fight against its prison. Morana quickly wrapped it under her darkest silks in many wraps until it was encased in darkness, silencing it.

xxxxxxxBefore she was the statue, in an agonizing pose no sculptor could dream of crafting. Morana smiled through the waves of adrenaline flowing through her body. It would now fetch a hefty price to the right seller. She took a deep breath calming herself.

xxxxxxx– Is it over? - Brie asked, unable to stand.
xxxxxxx– Brie, you need a healer! - Elena cried. She was not used to battles in such small spaces. - Sev must be here by now! I'll bring him here! Don't move!
xxxxxxx– No! Elena! No!
xxxxxxx– Leave her. - Morana said. - She's safe to go. And you do need help.

xxxxxxxThe princess left them alone in the hall to find a healer.

xxxxxxx– Are there no others?
xxxxxxx– Nevermore than three at once. - Morana said, leaning to Brie's side. There was a deep gash on her leg, but a proper healer would have magic.
xxxxxxx– But at the whole of the town?

xxxxxxxThe nocturne looked at the blood trailing down her leg. It pooled beneath them in a small puddle that would soon become a haemorrhage if aid wasn't to come. Brie seemed unphased by it as most plague dragons would be.

xxxxxxx– There may be others around town. Where there is a trio, there may be others. They only appear at dusk and may resurface every night for the next two weeks.
xxxxxxx– We must form a search party. - She roared with conviction. - And keep the wee ones safe. Is there... A way?

xxxxxxxMorana smiled, looking at the trailing blood.

xxxxxxxIn the past, this would be were she said where there's a way, there's a cost, but her mind went to her daughter, who was safe at home. But what of her daughter's best friend? Or the little one who studied with Maeve and was afraid of the sea? Maeve would speak of them frequently, and they were all around town, completely unaware of the danger they could be in.

xxxxxxx"This is not my problem."

xxxxxxxShe stood up, eyes on the pool of blood and rushing footsteps approaching.

xxxxxxx– Where there is magic, there is always a way.
