There was a time before Aleit, although Huxley could barely remember it. Not that he particularly wanted to remember a time before Aleit--she was by far the best part about living with the Fáilte Flight. His parents had brought him to Fáilte and left the flight to serve the Tidelord while he was still a hatchling; his adoptive family had loved him as fiercely as any other hatchling, but something had been missing, and it wasn’t until the Fáilte Flight was weathering the snow and ice of the Southern Icefield that he found it. As soon as Aleit was old enough to leave the nursery, she and Huxley were inseparable. They spent their days skating across frozen lakes and romping through the snow, building snowfaes and snowcoatls and constructing elaborate igloos. They made believe that they had a flight of their own, that Aleit was the fastest, strongest warrior in the clan and Huxley was her dutiful deputy, defending their clanmates from enemy flights and ferocious lionsnakes. Huxley didn’t mind being second-in-command; Aleit was quick-witted and clever, a natural-born leader. She may have been a few seasons younger than Huxley, but she didn’t let that keep her from taking the lead on all their adventures, Huxley following dutifully behind her. Aleit laughed at all of Huxley’s jokes, even though hers were funnier. When the Fáilte Flight left the Southern Icefield to head for a new home in the Sunbeam Ruins, Huxley couldn’t help but think that a new home in the Lightweaver’s domain was perfect for them; Aleit’s smile lit up any room as brightly as the sun itself. She belonged in the heavens with the Lightweaver herself, he was sure of it. With the clan settled in their new home in the Hewn City, Huxley and Aleit began finding their places as adults within their flight, Aleit rising naturally through the ranks of the battle team while Huxley drifted between half a dozen different roles and jobs, not quite having the discipline for the battle team or the patience to learn to be a healer, but discovering a knack for keeping mischievous hatchlings occupied and out of trouble. Some of the clan’s old dragon queens told him he would do well with hatchlings of his own if he would just find a nice girl and settle down--he would laugh and tell them he wasn’t sure about all that, but his mind would wander back to the imaginative games he’d played with Aleit as a hatchling, childhood dreams of running off and starting their own flight morphing into new dreams, not of beginning a new flight, but perhaps of starting a family… If only he could work up the courage to tell her how he felt. |
