Bitter air pinched my spine, leaving my frill on end.
Out of desperation, I threw my talons forward. Warning.

A mere click returned, "Tisk, tisk, tisk. Wasting."

"No," I hissed, "Leave me. Let me be."

Silence...

"I told you to leave me."

"Wasting," it mocked, "wasting, wasting, wasting.."

Tears curled down my face. A shaky snarl replaced my frown.

"Waste," came the tease once more.

"No," I growled, "I am worthy, cursed creature. I regret every pact I have ever been swindled into making with you, foul fiend. This is the ground to which I am charged and I refuse to see you sallow it further. Leave me."

Silence... again....

"You heard me, damned beast! Seek your master and tell him I swear to break our oath."

"Wasted... Wasted... Wasted..." With that, the haunting gaze was swallowed by the night.

Shaking uncontrollably, I spent the rest of my time pacing about the palace halls. Not even the cool breeze flittering through the open windows in the grand chamber wrought that exchange from my mind.
