GIULIO ~
Artifact Collector and Seller
Museum Curator

overview
Giulio frowned at his father. Knowledge? Adventure? Bah, he couldn’t care less. He was in it for the money; artifacts could fetch a fair price with the right buyer, after all. Besides, he hadn’t been gifted his position as head of the Navigator Museum, nor was he one of the biggest collaborators for nothing. All of this came from the money he’d made with artifacts smuggled out from under father’s nose.

The Banescale had attempted time and again to get his father to appreciate the monetary value of their findings, but it was to no avail. Stubbornness was one thing they had in common, it seemed.

Regardless, this was still better than common clan life. Giulio cringed at the thought of having to work for a living, constrained to hours of doing some task or another. He preferred his current ‘job;’ it paid well and, really, his father did most of the work.

ABOUT____

brought to life by user Coincidence
Wonders, exhilaration, great treasures to be found-- that was the three things most adventurers jotted down in their mental notepads when they first start on their journey. With experience, one could find them easily if they knew where to look. Giulio's, however, looked a bit different. When the messy writing and extraneous notes are removed, in fact, it looked a little like this:
  • great treasures
  • treasures
  • oh come on just get to the point already treasure

It was understandably so, then, that his father didn't really approve of his way of going about the line of work. He had a family business and a name to uphold, after all. And after all, what was the point of having a collection when it would be gone the next week, anyway? He made this disdain glaringly clear, as well. Giulio knew. He was a smart one. In fact, he was smart enough to ask another question as well; why listen to the old man when you can just spirit an ancient relic or two every now and then and get rewarded handsomely for it?

Rewarded handsomely he was, and a seat at the head of the museum was the grandest prize of them all. With this position, he no longer had to bay from the scrutiny of his father's eye every time he had the hankering for some extra weight in the vault, thank the Tidelord. He didn't even have to go on the expeditions himself-- all there was to the job was buying this, selling that, rinse and repeat.

And although itself was boring, it was relatively easy, at least for a dragon with such a knack for profit as him. It also left him a great few windows of time for himself, which were spent combing for more-- whether that "more" was treasure, appreciation, or any other sort of wealth immaterial depended on mood. Despite this comfortable living, however, he'd still feel the pull of the less-than-legal markets. Despite his sharp eye for weighing investments, he'd risk the seat time and time again for the allure of selling something that shouldn't have been sold, at least to the people they were going to, or receiving treasure that didn't rightfully belong to him. But don't worry about him, a common saying of is, it wasn't too hard escaping the ever-watchful(but not always focused) eye of his father. He mightn't have gone treasure-hunting for the wonders or the exhilaration, but that was all present, if one knew where to look. And in this case, the best place to look would be the vault.

Thieves' Honour

by the amazing kingseedling

xxxxxxx“Giulio, did you see a brooch somewhere here?”

xxxxxxxGiulio turned around to the hulking form of his father, hunched over the worn bench in the cluttered back room of their museum. The ruby brooch that had previously been lying precariously among the piles of other artifacts there was now carefully tucked into a satchel hanging from Guilio’s neck, but his father would (hopefully) never find out.

xxxxxxx“No, I’m not certain I even remember us having one…”

xxxxxxxHis father scratched the back of his neck, one calloused arm straining against worn leather filling Guilio’s vision for a second. He really needed to remember to renovate this place. There was barely enough room for Guilio in there, let alone him and his beast of a father.

xxxxxxx“Well, that’s odd. Still, not too much of a loss, these vases will make a far more interesting display.” His father turned around, nearly knocking some of the afore-mentioned vases to the ground. Guilio did his best to hide his cringe. Even if he didn’t care whether these latest artifacts were educational, they were still worth quite a lot… His father took in his expression and nodded.

xxxxxxx“Alright then, boy, I’ll be off. We have another expedition to the Cairnstone Rest planned… If you’re not too busy, would you like to join? I could use another body against those irritating skeletal wyrms.”

xxxxxxxGuilio quickly schooled his expression into something sympathetic.

xxxxxxx“I’m afraid there’s just too much work to do around the museum… All these new artifacts need to be tagged and catalogued, for one.”

xxxxxxxHis father nodded understandingly.

xxxxxxx“Well then, I’ll see you in a few weeks. Take care, my boy!”

xxxxxxxHis warm palm landed on Guilio’s shoulder, jostling his satchel. Guilio prayed that the movement wouldn’t cause the brooch to clank against the other little trinkets he had stashed in there, and thankfully it appeared that the bag was full enough not to make any sound.

xxxxxxx“I’m proud of you son. We’re doing good work… You’ve really lived up to your potential and I couldn’t be happier.”

xxxxxxxWith that final stab in the heart, his father left, adjusting his patched and dusty hat as it knocked against the doorframe on his way out.

xxxxxxxGuilio took another moment to breathe in the dusty silence of the room. He’d known from the beginning that stealing from his father wouldn’t be easy. The guilt that had filled him the first time he had stolen from their artifacts had been enough to convince a younger him that he would never steal again… And yet he kept doing it. Apart from the guilt, it was entirely too easy. His father was disorganized at best and had a level of trust in his beloved son, enough to overlook the occasional “lost” trinket on their travels. Now that Guilio had a steady career as head of the museum, the necessity of these little black market ventures was significantly less, but the urge to steal still remained.

xxxxxxxAt first, the guilt had been easy to ignore, back when he had toddled across the world after his father. A lifetime of muddy tents and grimy sleeping bags had been reminder enough of just why he stole. Who could blame him? He was young and penniless. Where the people he met on his travels lavished in their cultivated hoards, all Guilio had to his name were his clipboard and pen, the clothes on his back and a handful of extra blankets. His father’s habit of generosity towards education did not extend to the security of his family, and so Guilio had had to take matters into his own arms. A statuette here, a runestone there, a quick trip to the shady archways of the Mirrorlight Promenade and he could afford all the bags and rings he could ever want. Even the burden of betraying his only family was assuaged by soft silk shirts and heavy chained necklaces. If his father ever asked where he got such fine items, it was easy to lie and say they were a gift from the locals, for their important work on the ruins there.

xxxxxxxBut now that he could afford all of these on his own, he still craved the rush of thievery. Many a night he was kept awake in bed (only the finest sheets and pillows, of course), pushing down the guilt that now haunted him. It wasn’t as if the brooch would bring any much value to the museum… But it still ate away at him, burning like hot coals from inside his satchel, making him sweat through his fine muslin undershirt. Or perhaps that was the tiny, unventilated room. Right, he was still standing there, alone. With one more cursory glance at the pottery and plates laid out across the tables, he exited the room, only to bump once more into his father.

xxxxxxx“You alright there, son? I was just coming back to ask if you had seen the chimera relic I found last month, but you seemed very deep in thought.”

xxxxxxxGiulio stammered as he was faced once more with the warm eyes of his father… From whom he had also stolen the relic that was sitting in his satchel.

xxxxxxx“I… was just thinking about how uh, old your scarf is. Have you thought about replacing it?”

xxxxxxxHis father looked down at his admittedly quite stained and faded scarf.

xxxxxxx“Well, it’s for warming my neck and it’s doing the job just fine. No use fixing what ain’t broke.”

xxxxxxx“Right, right…” Giulio trailed off. His father, seemingly having forgotten what he came back for, grunted and patted Giulio’s back (once again, jostling that stupid bag) and headed off again. Giulio stared after him in relief and quite a bit of misery. The second encounter with his father had worsened his guilt… But, thinking about it, it also gave him an idea.

xxxxxxxTwo days later, Newport would find a brand new silk scarf carefully packaged and addressed to him from an anonymous sender hidden amongst his camping supplies. When asked about it, Giulio would deny all responsibility… But privately? He could feel just a bit of that ever-present guilt slough off his shoulders. It’s not really thievery if the money goes back to the owner, right? And his father’s scarf was such an eyesore. In the end, Giulio was doing them both a favour.

Honestly though? I love the colours of almost every single dragon you have. The teal and brown combination is amazing. Maybe I'm just partial because teal is my favourite colour.
Anyway, love this guy! He looks so cool!

This bane looks SO good, and I love how well he matches/integrates with the rest of this lair tab, considering how much more limited customizing ancients is, quite impressive :]
