Biography
Liviyatan
| While many Banescales made their homes in the Blacksand Annex, and thus were trapped and slowly perished, Livyatan had a different sort of existence. His family had travelled far from their typical lairs, and he had hatched, unremarkable and unremarked upon, in the middle of the Southern Icefield. His family had quickly departed for warmer quarters, leaving Livyatan alone in the snow. Setting out on his own, he made his way to the sea, and instead of flying over it, quickly took to the water. Unlike many dragons, he didn’t need assistance to learn to breathe underwater, instead developing the skill naturally. He quickly made his way to the deepest parts of the Sea of A Thousand Currents and found a variety of creatures most dragons have yet to discover. |
He became bored after a time, and that was what initially prompted him to trick other dragons. The other Ancient breeds were land based and spent very little time in the water, not possessing his knowledge of how to breathe underwater, and so they looked at the sea with fear. Livyatan, wanting solitude, encouraged that fear, using props he created and having other ancient sea life assist him to make himself look far larger and more dangerous. He began to acquire epithets, the demon of the deep, the Leviathan. He rarely needed to hurt anyone, even the boldest dragons fled when they saw him, and Livyatan eventually had the peace he craved. After a time, however, the solitude ate at him. It turned out that being alone constently could get boring after a century or two, and Livyatan eventually began to hibernate. He enclosed himself in his cave and was not seen or heard from again for centuries. Modern dragons had all but forgotten him, the terror of the ocean, although the Leviathan Trench, when it began to be settled by Water dragons centuries later, was named after the myths of him. They were still told at night, as bedtime stories to frighten little dragons to behave, and so it is likely fitting that it was a hatchling who first spotted Livyatan when he clawed his way out of his cave, hungry and wondering what had happened to his beautiful, peaceful trench? |
