 		He's been a lot of things over the years; a farmer's brighteyed son, a lovestruck idiot, giddy and young under Vincent's gaze. He's been a soldier, then a commander, then a leader

He's been dead. Watched his teammates, his comrades, his friends valiantly choke back tears at a grave he didn't lay in and known he might as well have been six feet under. He's been alive and he's died and he's not sure what he is anymore

All that's left is his final, self appointed, mission. There's a power that still sings in him, even so many years after he was … changed (enhanced, the military would say. He's grown vary of their assessments).
It's what makes him certain he will fix things. They averted one crisis (before everything crumpled in his hands, bloodied and bruised), but he's made grave mistakes that need correcting as well

And Gabe's still out there, somewhere

So he fights on, what else is he supposed to do? For soldiers, the war rages on
