Many glassmakers are content to work with sand. Not so with Cassiopeia. She works, instead, with fallen stars. Meteorites, to be precise. Tucked away in her observatory, she watches the skies for those telltale streaks of light. It might take her days, even weeks, to find the star where it fell, but she is patient; and anyway, she only needs a little bit of it to execute her creations. Star-stone is strong, but her will is stronger. Her magic, razors of ice sharper even than diamonds, slices through the toughest rock. A tilt of her head, and the razors turn into grasping claws. The stone is crushed, at last, into glittering silver sand. Literal stardust. An Ice dragon she may be, but Cassiopeia has also learned to work with fire for the sake of her craft. Molten stardust turns into sheets of light, ready to be molded and shaped. She creates tiny glass sculptures, amulets, ornaments and talismans imbued with the very brilliance of the stars. They are powerful objects on their own, and much demanded by sorcerers and spellcasters from all over Sornieth. She produces larger creations, too: more utilitarian-looking jars and pots. These, however, have the potential to be the most powerful, for they are made to trap spirits, beings of pure magic. Small wonder, then, that sometimes these beings seek out her home. In revenge for their entrapped brethren, perhaps—or more sinisterly, acting on the instructions of their masters, seeking to destroy the stardust harvester so that she can't aid the competition. But Cassiopeia always emerges unscathed from these confrontations—and indeed, why should she not? What does she have to fear from this world's creatures, when the very stars crumble beneath her frigid touch? |
