Zeni
adventurous inventor

Zeni, like most lightning flight dragons, began her life as an inventor. She would often be found in her underground den, various gears and wires strewn around her in a haphazard mess. No one cared about the mess as long as she was working - which she was. While she could appreciate the diligence and care that went into each project, Zeni though that a lot of the inventions were, well, boring? It wasn't exactly fun to work on the same thing over and over, day in and day out. That was why Zeni wanted to do something different, something big that would make everyone notice her and admire her work. Once she was old enough to have her own space to study and design her various tests, she began her work on what she thought was a great idea - a pair of mechanical wings. She knew that there were already dragonmade wings to help a dragon fly, as well as wing guards to protect wings during flight or battle, but there was nothing to actually help a flightless dragon become airborne. This bothered her. While a great many of her clanmates could travel freely through the sky, a select few, by breed or injury, couldn't take off much higher than a few feet, and they had the burden of walking everywhere. Zeni wanted to fix this, and insure no dragon ever had to kill their feet by walking ever again. She didn't succeed.

By the time she had laid out the blueprints for a successful clan, life had moved on. A new era was beginning, with new hobbies and crazes. The clan had decided to distance itself from the odd metal curiosities they had once cherished and decided to work with various wires and electrical machines instead. Zeni found herself caught in the flow, and she didn't like it. She had a goal, but now that goal would never be reached.

Night after endless night, Zeni travelled on. She'd left her home clan behind, in hopes of a brighter future. Maybe she would return one day, but for now a break was needed. A week passed. Then another. Still another. One month. It wasn't long until a whole year had passed, and still Zeni didn't return. It was too painful to think of how her clan hadn't respected her wish to stay with the past, at least until she'd finished her wings. If only they had let her complete her one unique invention, they may not have had to leave her behind. But they didn't.

Time passed.

Life in the Shifting Expanse would surely have moved on by now. Zeni hung her head, frills dangling down by her side. She wanted to return, more than ever. But... what would they think of her? She had left without a word. Would they still accept her? Or would they turn her away, at last? Gradually, Zeni's mind began to clear, and she began to think. Her empty scroll was suddenly full of sketches, of exotic valleys and alluring mountains. She would let her quill leave its mark, a mark that no dragon would ever forget. When she returned, they would remember her. Not by her inventions, nor her personality. They would remember her by the places she'd been, the sights she'd seen, and the freedom she'd found. Her spirit would outlast the expectations, and she would have her liberty.
