» Biography

A gentle starseer who is more content to spend his time watching the stars than fighting or involving himself in any sort of political standoff, Orion is thankful for the fact that, as a male, he’s not predisposed to be considered for the next clan ruler and can spend his time doing what he loves - stargazing. He has a somewhat lavish lifestyle, enjoying the extra perks that come with being the son of the queen, and often dresses in expensive silks to make the extra effort to look the part of the prince of Shal’anir. For some, this makes him an intimidating individual to approach. He has a way with words and is playful to the point it can come across as flirting, but carries no malicious intent - he’s a kind, well-mannered dragon despite his status. He even goes so far as to play mediator when it comes to his older sister, Andromeda, and is seen as the one to go to if someone wants something from her.

Despite acting as mediator for his sister, he’s not naturally trusting in some of the company his mother keeps, even if he understands why she does. Orion has taken a particular disliking to Vizier, watching the other like a hawk, and gives way to the underlying tension between the two of them more often than he likes to admit. The two seem to make the effort to get on in front of Vesper, although it’s so pointed that it’s obvious that it’s not being done for any reason other than to undermine one another’s position. Vesper is strangely content to let this happen, rarely stepping in as the two skydancers seek to one-up the other, and watches with some pride as the power sways in Orion’s favour more often than not.

Something that is key to Orion, but is also something he sees as inconsequential now that he’s found his place, is that he’s blind. Once captured by a rival clan after a fatal error in judgement by his mother, his captors saw fit to take Orion’s sight in payment for their own losses, and, despite the best efforts of Shal’anir’s healers, the damage was too horrific to undo. Orion’s eyes were quite literally torn from their sockets - there was nothing there to heal - and the skydancer struggled for months to come to terms with the sight he had lost. The cloth he wears now is redundant in hiding the damage from himself, and it was something he wore, and still does wear, more for the sake of other dragons. Without it, dragons tend to be afraid of him, or belittle him, and their treatment of him is something that Orion doesn’t care for. It’s just easier to keep the cloth on.

Blind in one sense, but finally seeing true in another, Orion has a different sight entirely that doesn’t rely on his eyes. Using his antennae, which were naturally sensitive anyways, Orion sees the auras of those who are around him in his mind’s eye. Powerful dragons have stronger, more stifling auras that can serve to swamp him, while those who are weaker are much easier to come to terms with. He reacts to power, accurately reading any dragon he meets, and uses it to his advantage should he come across a dragon that draws judgement on Orion before Orion himself can really make his first impression. It’s perhaps this that now makes him more intimidating than his artful appearance - dragons tend to presume he’s unseeing in every sense, and he has no interest in explaining anything. He finds it much more fun that way, watching a dragon squirm uncomfortably in his presence as he sits oh so pretty, and even revels in it. Orion might not be the next ruler of Shal’anir, but he will make himself known, and is no stranger to putting his foot down.

APPEARANCE
Orion is incredibly beautiful, with scales that glisten, wings that fracture light, and a delicate frame that speaks of his relations to his mother. He often wears a kind expression, sitting as a feline with his paws tucked in and tail curling around itself whenever something particularly amuses him. The cloth across his face is a deep midnight with the emblem of Shal'anir stitched in silver thread, delicately adorned as the rest of him is.
RK03XW1.png
SIGHT
Orion relies on auras to know where other dragons are, who they are, and how much of a threat they may or may not be. It's not perfect, but no sight ever is, and it's more than enough to see him live relatively comfortable despite his disability. His sight is the reason he's often behind other dragons - tracking their aura trails as to allow him to get a sense of the landscape around him, and following their footsteps to give the impression he knows exactly where he's going.

PROWESS
Despite himself, Orion knows he cannot just spend his life sitting pretty. He has begun training under Eidolon to help in physically defending himself should he need to. he shows a lot of promise, moving like water with his blade and using his unique sight to monitor his opponent with unnerving accuracy. Soon, he hopes to not only be his older sister's advisor, but also her guard should she ever need it - not that he really believes she ever will.

A New Bond «

Orion stared up at the ebon wyvern before him, eyes unseeing but well aware as the large beast looked down at him with much the same curiosity he did her. He had heard of the clutch of wyverns that had hatched some years prior from the queen, understanding the gravity of the situation, but had always presumed that he would never get to meet one of the newest on account of their extremely sheltered existence. The best Orion ever received was the stories, the tales, that his sister told him; how their scales glistened like pure obsidian, their sheer power even at such a small size, and the incredible intelligence that rested just beneath the surface.

Yet, upon going to his usual place that he always did whenever Shal’anir became too busy on the ashen cliffs, he found himself to not be alone after all.

Zek'hara, as she was called, stood just a few feet away from the suddenly tiny skydancer. While no way near as large the Black Dread known as Ka'avak, she was impressive in her own right. Rich obsidian scales glistened in the moonlight, her wing membranes just as dark as Ka'avak's but with an underlying nightshade pigment that, should they have been raised to a source of light, would have been of a rich purple hue. The very tips of her talons and muzzle had a faint tint to them, and her eyes, which looked out beneath a surprisingly slim brow, were dark, and although Orion couldn’t see her how others perceived her, his breath was still taken away. The aura around her was saturated with power that was beyond ancient, radiating off of her in waves of shadow that belied her size, and her eyes stared out with such perfect clarity that cut through Orion’s unusual sight and brought him back to reality.

She was, for lack of a better word, magnificent. Overshadowed by her brother, Rath'gar, and dwarfed by Ka'avak, but magnificent nonetheless.

Orion remembered once that he had seen his mother, Vesper, bow in the presence of the wyverns, as a sign of utmost respect. Sekk, the one who was perhaps the closest to a 'handler' of the ancient dragons, tended to forego this tradition on account of being almost as respected as the wyvern he controlled, and also due to his close bond to Ka'avak in particular. Orion had no bond to any wyvern to allow for such a blatant show of disrespect as to not bow, but he was also no ruler wishing to appease after cycles of torment. As he looked to Zek'hara, Orion did not bow, he did not incline his head, nor did he even look away when the young female let out a low growl in warning.

He simply watched her as she did him. As curious as the skydancer was about the wyverns, this one was just as curious about him. Her interaction with dragons had been undoubtedly limited to very few, enough to count on one paw. Perhaps, then, it was foolhardy to entrust that Zek'hara would not be inclined to attack him for the arrogance he displayed, but, in the face of the giant, Orion felt no fear.

Perhaps not so old that Ka'avak had taught her what to expect from the 'lesser' dragons, Zek'hara looked to be confused by Orion’s strange acceptance of her presence. She sniffed at the air around him, not yet approaching him, before withdrawing and whistling. Behind her, the wyvern's tail twitched with anticipation and, perhaps, an air of playfulness and curiosity that Ka'avak had long since lost with her age.

Seeming to no longer consider Orion a possible threat, Zek'hara dared to tread a little closer, her steely purple gaze fixated on the other as she approached him. She sniffed again, lips pulling back to reveal rows of razor sharp fangs bared not in any sort of aggression, but apprehension, and her warm breath lightly ruffled Orion’s feathers as she inhaled. As she got even closer, now moving her head from side-to-side in an effort to get a proper look at Orion, he dared not to make any sudden movements, instead just slowly following her movement as to ensure, if she did suddenly nip, he would see it coming.

Yet, she did not. Zek'hara simply gave a low whistle as to conclude her 'investigation', before withdrawing again to regard Orion in a brief once-over. As he watched, Zek'hara whistled again, this time a much more shrill tone, and he suddenly felt an odd wave of curiosity emanate from within that did not seem quite like his own. It felt.. powerful, like a question spoken from an iron will. It came from the outside, from someone else entirely, but surely it hadn’t come from Zek’hara.. Had it?

All of a sudden, a shrill shriek sounded from behind him. As Orion whipped around to see where the sound had come from, he could see a huge black shape standing just a short distance away upon one of Shal'anir's roots that rose up from the ground. It looked as a monstrous being, absorbing all light, and all he could make out was the glint of teeth and piercing cyan gaze that burrowed into him even from the distance at which he stood. The shape of this one was literally lost in the sheer expanse of the powerful aura that surrounded it, but even Orion knew who it was, for there was no other like it. As he watched, the shape took a lumbering step forward, before letting loose another foul shriek in what could only have been warning.

Ka'avak.

Beside her, Orion could just make out the small shape of the Deathsayer, leaning on his old staff and staring out at the other skydancer with a closely guarded look in his eyes, aura more suffocating than the wyvern’s beside him and rancid with the black magic he used. As Ka'avak bristled and growled, Sekk laid a claw onto her muzzle, and the wyvern drew back a few paces, but her gaze remained fixated on Orion - or, rather, the one behind him.

Zek'hara raised her head at seeing Ka'avak, letting out her own growl that was no way near as powerful as the other female. It was more of a response, as if the younger had been caught doing something she shouldn't have been, and, for a brief moment, Zek'hara looked the part of a guilty hatchling caught by her mother. The idea was almost humorous, but the humour was lost in the reality of the giant beasts that stood on opposing sides. Orion didn't trust Zek'hara to not accidentally crush him should she put up more of a fight than it was worth, and so, in his first display of 'respect', the starseer dipped his head towards Ka'avak and graciously backed up a few paces away from the younger wyvern.

Ka'avak seemed pleased with this display, drawing back further and giving a sharp, harsh blow from her nostrils. She then sharply jabbed her head to the skies, snapping her jaws shut in an obvious command. Zek'hara gave her own snort, before responding in kind. Casting Orion what he could have sworn was a strangely remorseful look, the young wyvern let out a small shrill whistle as to seemingly wish the dragon farewell, before turning her gaze skywards and flaring wings of deep nightshade.

Steeling himself for the inevitable gust of wind, Orion still barely managed to stay upright as Zek'hara gracefully launched herself into the air with a single flap of her wings. Another saw her already high above him, continuing to rise upon the currents brought up by the dark sea that crashed into the cliffs below. As she went, Orion could only watch in awe and.. sadness? Seeing Zek'hara go brought a strange well of emotion up to his chest, as if it would be the last time for a long time that he would see the young wyvern, and his eyes lingered on the stormy skies above even when the last glimpse of Zek'hara flying between the clouds had long since gone.

Movement from Ka'avak then drew the starseeer’s attention back down to the ground, and there was no other near him to redirect her intense focus elsewhere. The growl she gave was for none other than himself, and Orion knew better than to hold his ground against the surly female. With a dip of his head, the skydancer picked up the small scroll he’d intended to read when he’d first came here that had laid forgotten at his feet, and, gaze respectfully averted, went back the way he’d came towards Shal'anir.

---

When the young prince of Shal’anir had finally gone, Sekk turned to look to Ka'avak with an unreadable look in his dull gaze. The wyvern stared back at him, emotion swimming just beneath the surface, and her pupil shrunk to a pinpoint as she focused intently on the Deathsayer.

"You felt it, didn't you?"

Beside the frail skydancer, Ka'avak gave a low throaty rumble and blew out her nose in determined confirmation. The pupil dilated again as her eyes rose skywards, scanning the clouds for the young wyvern she had dismissed only moments before. She had felt it, just as Sekk had.

Sekk gave a harsh click, but there was a thoughtful undertone to the otherwise guttural tone, as he rapped his claws against the petrified wood of his staff. "Not one I would personally choose, but I can see why."

A snort from Ka'avak. He is different. Strong.

Sekk nodded in agreement. "Strong indeed." The Deathsayer then gave a harsh click and leant back on his hind legs. "Best to monitor just for now, I believe. When the time is right, and our suspicions have been confirmed, I will speak with our queen. For now, though, we wait."

The ebon wyvern beside him gave a low growl in her own agreement, bobbing her head in a motion she seemed to have picked up from Sekk. Yes. Ka'avak looked up to the skies once more, cyan eyes narrowing as a rumble emanated from deep within her chest and she monitored the shapes that spiralled overhead. We wait.

━━━━━━━━━━

- Has the beginnings of a bond with Zek'hara, but it's not very strong and is more of a mutual interest between the two
- Manages Zek'hara's unruly side rather than revelling on it and, as he grows as a dragon, he seeks to also help Zek'hara grow into her own self rather than just following the footsteps of another
- Has a really nice voice and has a perpetual smile on his face
- Can, and will, kick butt. No one sees it coming
- Does occasionally take off the blindfold, but it's very rare to actually catch him with it off bc he has a sixth sense for when another is about and who they are
- Eventually, he'll learn how to share Zek'hara's sight
- The auras are generally very accurate in detailing the shape of a dragon, with any 'waves' of power rolling off of them, but some dragons (like Ka'avak) can appear 'shielded' by their aura and Orion cannot determine their exact shape
- Spends a lot of his time stargazing - says that, when he lost his sight, that the stars only became even more beautiful, and paints really pretty pictures of them
- Sees importance in good clan relations, but has an eye for design, too
