You stare over the fields. The wheat is gently trembling in the wind and the sun is beating down on you. Sweat is gathering along your neck and however often you try to swipe it away it still drenches your front. Another drought, they rumble. There has been a drought for every summer you can remember. Still, you continue working, watering the crops with your sweat and blood. You leave in the evening with dirt under your nails and the feeling that you can never wash it away. The nearby river gurgles pitifully and the water level sinks until nothing remains besides the bones buried in the river bed. The stank of sulfur and ash stays. When the sun sets over the fields it bathes them in a bloody red. You can imagine that they are still burning. On and on you claw into the dirt, one day at a time. No one talks, your tongues weighted down by the taste of rust. No one looks up either until a far away bell tolls. Its clang rings low and vibrates in your bones and dread settles deep. Everyone fears the bell. You look up even though you know better. There is a distortion wafting over the corn and it is taking a sharp turn into your direction as if it can feel your gaze. The last thing you see is a mirage in the form of a young man with nearly red eyes manifesting in the middle of an explosion of wheat, its arm stretched high above its head. Then the gleam of a sickle in the afternoon light and a slick sound. Your blood will nourish the crops just a little while longer. |
