The Alchemist of Scent
wind_rune_100x100.png
As a child, Flux found himself drawn to the alchemical labs in his clan. He was forever fluttering around the alchemists' heads and desks -- a fall into a cauldron was inevitable, and it was only the quick action of the alchemists that saw him fished out and then thoroughly toweled off and scolded.

That didn't dampen Flux's enthusiasm one bit, though. As soon as he was old enough to travel, he set out to find an alchemist to apprentice himself to. He found one and was soon studying under her.

He completed his studies a little quicker than he would have liked. One day, his teacher rather stiffly told him that it was time for him to set up shop on his own. He couldn't miss how she wrinkled her snout, or the nasal way she was talking: It was something all dragons did after they'd spent some time around him. For his fall into the cauldron had had an unfortunate side effect: The smell of whatever unidentifiable glop had been brewing had clung to him permanently, and at times it sloughed off him in waves of scent. He largely smelled like boiled sweet potatoes, but after a while, even that became too much to bear.

And so a large part of Flux's free time was dedicated to finding out how to best remove that scent, or at least just change it into something more charming. Why not roses, for example? Or perhaps fresh-baked bread?

Whatever else he smelled like, it was time for Flux to leave. He'd learned all he could from his teacher, and he'd been considering striking out on his own, anyway. He bade her a fond goodbye (though he kindly refrained from hugging her), and went off to set up his own lab.

Flux has his lab in the wilderness -- not because he's particularly disliked, but rather because the smells are usually too much to bear. Over the years, he's managed to get rid of the worst of it: the explosions, for a start, and the all-obscuring smoke. A wide, neat perimeter is chalked around his property. There are rags and goggles of various sizes hanging on poles: visitors will need to protect their eyes and noses when entering the lab, after all. (No one ever steals these. The smells stick to them after a while.)

Flux is often hard at work in the lab, concocting various scented products: perfumes, insect repellant, even stink bombs for harmless pranks. The lab is surprisingly clean. There are no splashes of goop, no colored fumes floating around. The air is always as clear as glass -- but just as heavily laden with smells as a flower garden...or on a particularly bad day, a dumpster.

"How do you stand it?!" dragons invariably gasp, for Flux wears only goggles; he never has any rags tied around his snout. The Alchemist of Scent smiles back rather sheepishly. He tells the story of his childhood tumble into the cauldron, concluding with--

"It had one other side effect, you see. I can't smell anything at all."
