The traveler is young, inexperienced. They have not left their village before. But they have learned the art of navigation from their elders, and can travel even at night, if they navigate by the stars.
"Look to the North, do you see it?"
That brilliant, blue-white star..." The traveler steps in among the trees, their lantern close to their map. Its blue light pulses eerily, and the lines and instructions jump out in stark relief. A trail is marked, though it's too twisty for comfort....Instead, the traveler takes solace in the stars.
"Keep heading north; the other constellations will turn,
but you'll be fine, so long as you follow that star." The deeper into the forest the traveler goes, the tighter the trees close overhead. At one point, they lose sight of the sky. In panic, they crash through the brush, heedless of branches scraping their wings and hide. And breathe a sigh of relief when they see the star. It seems brighter now, winking almost cheerfully. The journey goes on...
"The path might be difficult to navigate in the dark. But keep going.
All you have to do is follow that star. Eventually, it'll sink, but you shouldn't worry, because soon the sun will rise..." ...and on. And on. And on. And... The traveler stumbles through a forest infinitely dark and cold. All of it is darkness, save for the blue-white star. All the other stars have fled. The traveler blinks, slowly becoming aware of this. Will the sun rise soon? It's so difficult to tell; it's so dark. They need to look beyond the trees. Only...where are the trees? There's nothing else but that blue-white star— And again, the traveler breathes a sigh of relief as pinpricks of light glint into view. They gleam and lengthen, stretching into lines that join in zigzags, spikes longer than the traveler is tall. The traveler pauses, and fear breaks through the reverie. And just before the blue-white star winks out, they see the lines of light for what they really are. Teeth. |
