THE PALE KING - DEATH LORD - PRINCE OF DECAY - LORD OF CLOUDS -
THE REAPER

Lore History:
Stolen from his nest, Mortarion was raised by the powerful Plague warlord Necare. He was strong in magic and wished for his nefariously adopted son to become so as well, but Mortarion soon came to resent his natural skills and his situation. He escaped, and joined with a band of non-magic-users trying to overthrow his erstwhile guardian. In short order, he became their leader, due to his inside information on Necare's movements and his extraordinary resistance to the poisonous lands of the Wyrmwound in which the warlord hid himself.
But this was still not enough to grant Mortarion and his Death Guard victory. His conquest of Necare was stolen by none other than his true father, the Emperor of Light. Though Mortarion served the Emperor for a time, he came to resent the Imperial dragon for the theft of his glory, his revenge, and began to view him as no better than his other father, a tyrant using magic to subdue those less powerful. He joined forces with his foremost brother Horus in an attempt to destroy this perceived hypocrisy, but Horus too turned magic to his own ends. Mortarion would have turned away, then...
But the Shade had its claws in him. For was he not a Bogsneak, a dragon born of magic? Was it not right and proper for him to use the gifts he was granted? When Mortarion struggled against this temptation, the Shade infected his loyal followers, forcing him to use his long-hidden powers and alchemical knowledge to try to cure them. Still he was not strong enough, until the Shade whispered, Let us help you...
Thus did Mortarion fall. Granted new powers and strength, he has become Shadeborn, the enemy of all Light, of all Dragonkind. He has returned to the festering pit in which he was raised, and taken up now the mantle of warlord like his father before him.
Personality: Mortarion is taciturn to a fault, rarely speaking above a harsh whisper or hiss. He looms, overseeing his warriors with a dispassionate eye. He cares for them only so long as they do not fail him. He has a fastidious, exacting nature, both for actions and for objects - things may rot where they are placed, but so long as they stay in the place they have been assigned, he is content with them. He delights in alchemy, especially poisons, but loathes magic, though he possesses that skill as well. He claims to fight for freedom from oppression and tyranny, but in his heart of hearts he knows he has become the very thing he rails against.
