Mitten

The clever Merchant

Skydancers are breeds often prided in their ability to read emotions and energies of dragons around them. It allows them to become mediators and ambassadors since they can keep tense situations from over escalating. Mitten's parents were no exceptions. Her mother became a famous entertainer, able to read a crowds mood and keep the air always energetic. When she wasn't dancing her mother always helped keep the energy of her clan calm. Her father was an imperial who fell for her grace. When they were expecting children, the clan had very high hopes. It seemed fate had other plans though.

Mitten came out different. Instead of hatching, her egg just popped like a bubble on her hatch day. Her eyes were bright but odd. When the clan's doctor gave her a checkup, Mitten was confirmed as blind. What made matters worse is as she grew she was blind to other things. She couldn't detect emotions or energy like her breed was known for. Sure, she knew if someone spoke a certain way they were mad, but everyone could do that. Mitten felt ashamed of herself and ran away. She didn't get far, since she kept bumping into a tree. Her parents kept trying to tell her it was okay, but she was inconsolable.

One day; while Mitten was out picking flowers by herself, a traveling merchant stopped her. The dragon asked her where her clan was, and if they would mind a traveler stopping by. Mitten grinned and showed them the way. As they went, the dragon noticed what Mitten was holding. In her paws were rare herbs. The traveler stopped her, their voice in shock. They asked where Mitten had gotten such rare items. Mitten shrugged. To her, they just seemed important, and when she picked them she sensed value in them. The dragon stopped in their tracks and pulled out items.

The dragon asked her to touch each item, and tell them what she thought of their rarity. Mitten looked confused but did as she was asked. As she said the rarity of each item, the dragon looked impressed. It seemed Mitten had given a perfect reading of each item. The dragon then asked her something odd. They invited her to come with them and learn how to be a proper merchant. Mitten looked dumbfounded and asked them to let her think about it. The dragon agreed and soon they reached her clan. Mitten ran to her parents, but bumping into a few things on the way. She asked them about the offer she'd received. They looked at one another, and told her to go. Mitten looked pleased and hugged them. In a few days the travler had sold their wares, and was ready to leave. Mitten joined hthem.

It turns out she had magic that let her sense value in things. With practice, she could even sense the value of a dragon's words. If a dragon was lying to her they seemed to be cloaked in filth, but when they told the truth a faint light line outlined them. It didn't let her see, but she could tell where they were as well using this trick. Mitten is a strong willed dragon, and gifted in her craft. No dragon has swindled her, and any who try are quickly outwitted. She makes her home in Gencentric's grand hall, setting up a booth every day. None could finer wares in all of the clan.
